Day trips other than theme parks...

Anybody have any places they like to go during a single day on their trips, OTHER than Universal, Sea World and the like?

We do a couple of things. We don't do them every trip, but have done each multiple times.

The one we do most often is a trip to Daytona. We go there, do absolutely nothing but have lunch or dinner, drive up and down the strip and check out the shops, including the big mall there.

The other is a trip to Cocoa, to Ron Jon's and a few other place. A lot of times we'll coordinate that one to coincide when one of the Disney ships will be in dock. You can't visit the ship, but its still a thrill to get to see it sitting there.

Do you shop at Ron Jon's or is there something else to do there?

There may be other stuff, but we usually go there and a few other shops. There's also a guy there that makes sea shell furniture and stuff, and we usually stop and see him. (We have a couple of things he did.)

It's really just something to do that involves different scenery and actually seeing the ocean for a bit.

I'm not sure. Last time I checked he didn't, but the business is TWOMBLEY'S and he's in Cocoa

I CHECKED!!! HE DOES!!! http://www.twomblysnauticalfurniture.com/

Our game room is decorated in a sort of pseudo Key West atmosphere, and the bathroom in there is done in sea shells, so we have a sea shell toilet seat.

We also have a table up there that is filled in with shells and stuff that was made from a hatch cover recovered from an old ship.

This stuff isn't for everybody, but if you have the right place to put it and have the right frame of mind, its pretty cool stuff.

Twombley is a real character. He is basically an adult surfer dude, who didn't want to leave the water and ended up putting together a career that would allow him to do what he wanted.

His shop is just a hole in the wall, but they have some beautiful items there and they'll take you in the back and show you the big stuff they're working on.

We have the two pieces, but we've often talked that if the lottery ever came in, (and of course we were moving to Celebration), we'd have him do a full dining room table for us that looks like an oceanscape, complete with lighting from underneath.

It's also amazing how many tables and things that people commission to store commemorative items in.

If you're ever in Cocoa, I'd stop by for a minute. He's a few blocks south of Ron Jon's on the opposite side of the road.

We like that awesome

An oceanscape with lighting from underneath sounds very cool. Can't wait for the dinner party at your Celebration house.

Another one of those threads I stumbled across.

I am an old surfer dude. Got the bad knees to prove it! Of course, it is different on the 'other' coast where I grew up. They got actual waves!

And you've never visited the Speedway in Daytona??? That was the one reason I visited there a few years ago.

I did...San Clemente. Remember Tricky Dick? But we were there first. We could see the front of his estate from our back yard. We lived up on the hill from downtown SC...

Unfortunately IMO the Disney resort has a beach that is only good for surfers.

Way too rough for me to swim in. Almost drowned so I'd say Vero beach is good for surfers. Saw lots of boogie boards when we were there last year.

Didn't try the boogie boards? I've always thought those looked like a blast and not too much learning. Did you the Vero beach was a good destination? Would you do it again?

I love the resort itself and have been a few times for a long weekend in the summer with my niece and nephew.

They do the boogie board. Me, forget it. I need my bones to last a few more years. The undertow there is so strong I almost drowned in the shore.

I'll stick to the pool and the view.

It's really a very beautiful resort. Very relaxing. The rooms are so close to the shore since they have a very short beach there that you can hear the surf so relaxing while you sit on the balcony and have your coffee in the morning.

I plan on going back again soon.

I have DVC so in points it's not too much money but not sure I'd pay those Disney rack rates though. It's a very pricey place if you pay cash.

I just don't know if I can bring myself to do a Disney resort that doesn't have parks near by... It would seem so strange!

If you really want to go to the parks they are only about 2 hours away.
The resort is real nice. Lots of hidden Mickeys to keep you entertained. mickey

My dad was a surfer for many years in SoCal. Predominately further north (Seal Beach, Huntington Beach, Newport) but he did surf all over the place. I never surfed because growing up, it felt like old hat. I did body surf and boogie board some though. Also got dragged out to sea a bit and a long way down the beach at Seal Beach with family one day (deadly riptide). Thankfully my dad had taught us from a young age what to do in that case or I wouldn't be here.

--back on topic--

I've done very little in the Orlando area outside the World. To my recollection, we've done a bit of shopping and I went to a nearby fair once where there was an impromptu car show and some fun shops.

Sounds like it could have been Kissimmee Old Town. They have a car show most weekends, which I intend to visit eventually.

That sounds about right. The 'fair' looked semi-permanent and the shops were in a kind of old timey strip.

Yep -- I bet that was Old Town. On my first adult trip to WDW, I stayed in a Days Inn right next to Old Town. It was fun, but seemed a bit run-down. I should check it out again, as that trip was years ago.

A very limited amount of time, yes. I enjoyed the carnival-style rides and am a car nut, so it was worth part of an evening for me.
