DCL starts work on new ships

From my blog -

Construction crews in Germany today began work today on Disney Cruise Lineâs two new ships.

The first steel cut in the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany, was a piece of the retro scrollwork that will cover the bow of the ships (similar to the scrollwork on Disneyâs existing Magic and Wonder ships, which the company says are designed to evoke memories of classic ocean liners from the 1930s).
The unnamed new ships, which will each have 1,250 staterooms and weigh 128,000 tons, are scheduled to arrive in Port Canaveral in 2011 and 2012. They will carry 4,000 passengers each, about 1,300 more than the Magic and Wonder.

Both of the new vessels will remain based at Canaveral through at least the end of 2014.

So exciting! Thanks for the news MT.

Any hints as to the names?

No, haven't seen anything. There was speculation on some board several months ago that they would keep in the mode of 'Magic" & 'Wonder' and I believe "Celebration" was mentioned, but I'm guessing that was pure speculation on some reader's part.

They probably don't want to do characters because then everyone would think the SS Mickey was the best. Maybe "Wishes" next?

Great news, MouseTraveler!

I think they should name the boats "Imagination" and "Celebration" (I like that!).

Now, because they're so much bigger than Magic and Wonder, will they have more restaurants/pools on board to serve so many more people?

Will the Disney Ships Resemble the Celebrity "Solstice" class ships?
It's not unreasonable to project that Disney's ships will be similar to the Celebrity ships. What's interesting, though, is that Celebrity is boasting how large their standard stateroom will be (215 sq. ft.). Disney's ships will be larger, but will have fewer staterooms (1,250 for Disney, 1,425 for Celebrity). While Disney isn't ready to make any boasts yet, I think we can expect Disney to announce that its new staterooms will be larger than those on the Magic/Wonder (and many other ships). It's also possible that Disney is dedicating substantially more space to its hugely popular kids programs, and to theaters big enough to satisfy guest demand (the theaters on the Magic and Wonder are often standing room-only). The other areas of under-supply/high demand on the Magic and Wonder are the number of available suites, and the difficulty of getting a table at Palo. It's not hard to guess that Disney will address both shortages in the new design.

Also saw the post I was talking about for the names. As of last May, the guesses were 'Disney Celebration' and 'Disney Dream'. (Again, speculation)

I also blogged a story today that the city of San Diego is going full force to become the home port for Disney's first west coast ship. They'll be competing with LA (of course).

Would they still be mainly Central American cruises, or would they go to like Alaska?

Wow! My preference would be San Diego--no question (never been to either, but LA scares me!). laugh

Bigger staterooms? Sounds AWESOME to me.

MT's gonna make me a cruiser!

Mexico. If they were doing Canada, they would leave from much farther up the west coast, if not Vancouver.

Plus, Disney dropped out of negotiations for Canadian ports a couple of months ago. Looks like it might be years before they get to Canada.

That's too bad. A Disney Alaskan cruise sounds like a great idea. Watch the pretty scenery and then do Disney Activities when that gets boring.

Having sailed on the Wonder I can personally say the Disney ships are fantastic compared to the other cruse line I have sailed with (Sounds like Car Evil) and I can't wait to book a cruse on the new boats. Gotta stick to the Caribbean cruses though because Castaway Cay is so amazing. Chilling on the Adults only beach with the guy in a Tux walking threw the water bringing me Konk (Spelling?) Drinks.

You bring up an interesting question. Wonder what they'll do on the west coast to emulate Castaway Cay on the Caribbean cruises?

CC is SUCH an enhancement over here, it'll be hard to equal it out on the west.

Interesting news; thanks for the potential names.

Good question as to how to replace Castaway Cay; then again, if Disney can't find an island, they'll probably just make one.

Wha?!? Are his pants rolled up?

Imagine a tux with black shorts instead of paints and black Beach shoes. You didn't even need to give him money, everything was done by room number/Last name.

Richardson 6000. And boom, here comes another drink. or whatever i was buying, just watch for that big bill on the last day.

That rules. That's actually one of the biggest things I love about WDW is just having everything on your room key! The fewer things you have to carry around with you when you're relaxing the better.

Thanks for the info. I wish you could stay at Castaway overnight. I think I'd spend the whole day sad it would be over soon. laugh

You COULD stay at Castaway Cay if you WORKED there! There are quite a few employees who actually stay on the island all the time. Others come in daily by boat, and I would assume the majority are from the ships themselves.

I think I saw that on the Travel Channel a while back; didn't the head guy say that they had to have a "certain type" of person to stay on the island all the time?

I think that could be very strange, indeed! How often do Cruise ships come by? Certainly not every day... That leaves lots of time to be, essentially, stuck on a desert island sad

Normally I think you'd have ships there three days a week, based on each week there being one 7 night, one 4 night, and one 3 night cruise each week. Less when one of the ships is either in dry dock or in another part of the world.

I guess a lot of it would depend on how often you can get away. Since they bring people in by boat every day to work, I'm sure you could get away to "civilization" as frequently as needed.

I think that anyone who has ever been there would agree with me in saying, I WANT TO LIVE ON CASTAWAY CAY!!! That place is a paradise.

But What I'm really thinking is, Cruse ships docking there is great, but they actually have a large part of the Island left unused.

Incredible idea! Does anybody know exactly how far from civilization CC is? As in, exactly how far and how long it would take you by boat to get to the nearest city?

I can see them having a resort there, very low profile so as not to spoil the view. In fact, they could probably build it so that you'd never even see it unless you were on the top deck of the ship.

You've GOT to think that somewhere at Disney somebody has the wheels turning on this one!

Probably just waiting for their planners to tell them that that the economy's ready to handle it.

Absolutely. That one is well on its way.

Great idea on the CC resort! Not sure how far it is "out there" MT. Good question. You really do have to be near some sort of service/healthcare facility, though don't you?

If you look at it on Google maps it is located right in the middle of the Bahamas with the nearest large land mass less than 10 miles away.

Yea, It will work.

The only way I know that is because while we were waiting for the tram one day, I was talking to a Bahamian lady that was working there. She told me that they came in every day.
