Expedition Everest Challenge!!

So just as I was getting really down about the lack of Disney in my life.. I decided to check out RunDisney's website to look into the 2016 marathon weekend and saw that Expedition Everest Challenge registration begins next week. After looking it over and running it by Bill (the bf) I think we are going to try and go for this!! Now I haven't looked a lot into it but tentative dates would be April 29th-May 4th. That would give us 6 days including travel days and would place the Challenge right in the middle of the trip. I'm going to get in contact with my cousin and see what resort he can get us into that week with his discount because renting DVC is going to seriously stretch the budget this close to our last trip. Looking into PORS or POFQ because of everyone's wonderful reviews on here (thanks). Oh and also this trip will be right before my birthday so I would be able to finally wear a birthday button! (we always go in October around Bill's birthday so this would be a nice change for me laugh )

So anyway... has anyone done this event? I have no problem with a 5k but Bill is a little hesitant since he is not much of a distance runner. I told him its laid back and fun and he seems to have relaxed a bit. I'll take any advice from RunDisney veterans on transportation, timing, etc. I know this is the last year for this event so I really really hope we can make it happen.

RunDisney says that this is the last year for this event unfortunately. I think they are replacing it with a Star Wars themed run.. Another reason I HAVE to do it this year!

I've never done it but I thought I'd read somewhere that the obstacles are throughout the run. That would break the run up a bit for Bill awesome

I would also recommend staying at a host resort for the transportation.

Yes..there are about four obstacles mixed in the course...from what I have read one was a row of haybales you have to jump over, double rows of tires you have to step through, there used to be a rope wall to climb but I think they removed it.

Thats what I was saying when I was explaining it to him. I'm actually really excited for the scavenger hunt after the race.. I think I may have him fully on board because I sold it as a way to visit Disney and do something totally new biggrin

I'm one of those people who doesnt get the run disney events, like at all. What's fun about that? Who wants to RUN on their vacation? Ok, run to the next fastpass, run to TSM at opening, run to get out of the rain.... But running FOR FUN?? What's up with that?! I'm not getting down on those who do it, life would be dull if we all loved the same things... I just don't get it (but then I'm allergic to running - honest Wink ) I'll live my running vicariously through others who do it and write trip reports about it Wink hint hint EmFord Wink

Hahaha I definitely get where you're coming from. I used to be totally allergic to running but did my first 5k as part of a fundraiser two years ago and was so shocked that I actually did it that I try to keep up with running just for the fitness aspect. I don't LOVE it but I know it's good for me so I tolerate it lol. I wanna do a run disney event is because it's something new and exciting in my favorite place in the world. And this one looks like it's got more interactive things to do rather then just a plain run.

Ditto, EmFord. Until I tried that first 5K, I didn't care if I ever ran again in my life. Once that was under my belt (and less horrible than I expected), I started to think about the fact that I could run AT DISNEY and the draw of seeing backstage stuff (ANY backstage stuff) was too good to pass up. runDisney events will likely be a staple for this former "confirmed couch potato" for the foreseeable future!

I never ran until I found out about the Disney runs. I was at Epcot one year and saw the end of the marathon and thought "I wanna be one of those people!" The fact the races were something new at Disney for me to do, plus backstage stuff and of course the medals (I want to do Dopey just because you get 6 medals!) keep me wanting to run more. I have very little interest in running races around my hometown, I'm pretty much strictly RunDisney awesome

Haha "confirmed couch potato" I love it!! Thats definitely where I have always seen myself. I'm glad you can definitely relate. And after reading about your ToT 10 miler experience I am so ready to take on a RunDisney event!

I had no idea you didn't run until RunDisney, I thought you were a regular. The medals are definitely part of my motivating factor as well. They're unique Disney souvenirs that I can say I "EARned" mickey

I HATE running! (that's why my taser has a 21 foot lead wire, I only have to be somewhat close! eek )

However, the adventurer type of theme Disney did for Expedition Everest sounded fun and to run thru the
park at night was appealing...so that is the only reason I considered it....

These hips were not made for running biggrin

My first race was Mickey's Jingle Jungle 5K in 2012 so I'm still fairly new to running mickey

I'm not a runner either. I had never run a day in my life until about a year and a half out from my wedding when both my DH (DF at the time) decided to run a half marathon to get in shape for the wedding. I went from never running at all to running my first half marathon in about 6 months. I still don't LIKE running, but I think a runDisney event would be fun because of all the distractions (backstage, character meets, etc)

Sounds amazing and the perfect excuse for a trip! I'm no runner but I do a couple of charity 5k runs through the year - I'd love to try a RunDisney event. One trip the Tower 10k was on but that required times and training and really expensive race fees so we just couldn't make it happen which was such a shame! It's on the bucket list that's for sure!

No! sad I was waiting on my Christmas bonus that I got TODAY. Never thought it would sell out in one day or I would have just registered... Oh well, I guess its not in the cards for me. Looks like that will give me extra money and planning for our Christmas trip.

Or maybe I can still sneak another trip in in 2015 biggrin

That one doesn't usually sell out that fast but I guess because it's the last one people jumped on it. For the other races you can still register after it sells out if you run for a charity. I'm not sure how it works but if you really want to do it, it may be worth looking into. Don't give up hope yet!

OR

You can tell your BF that your so disappointed you didn't get in that the only fix is two Disney trips in 2015 biggrin

Forget the hips - my jugs were not made for running! I do not need black eyes laugh

I do really like the idea of the souvenirs and the special trainers you can get (my friend has some Cinderella ones that are super cute!) but there's still that whole 'running' thing you have to do... Guess I'm gonna have to live vicariously through those who do it Wink or maybe I can get hubby to do it and I can just go cheer him on... Hmmmm how to talk him into that one...

Thats the plan! Working out details for next years December trip and still trying to slip another one in there somewhere. I think I'm going to try and convince my mom we need to go since we both have been to Disney the past 3 years but none of our trips were together! (Weird, I know)... I think a mother-daughter trip is required biggrin
