Explosion at Disneyland??

Chip and Co is reporting that Disneyland is being evacuated due to an explosion in Toon Town. Appears to be dry ice in a plastic bottle!! Good Lord. I'm really hoping this was just a family that wanted to keep their sandwiches cold and didn't think about what would happen throwing the bottle away after they didn't need the dry ice any longer. Probably naive....

Best to get updates via FB, if you're interested. The website is very slow due to heavy traffic....

I just heard it on the local news here too - they are evacuating Toon Town as a safety precaution.

From what I read this morning from the LA Times, "explosion" might be a little extreme of a term even though it's technically accurate. When I think of an explosion I tend to think of something more catastrophic, that could just be me though. The LA Times does say that there have been several of these dry ice devices showing up around the local Anaheim area lately.

The one thing that I didn't like in the LA Times piece was the quote from the tourist that was saying he thought Disney should have more security in the area after the incident. I'm sure that they did, Disney has always had a huge number of plain clothes "agents", just because you don't see Disney security, doesn't mean that they're not there. I've watched the plain clothes force take someone down before, it's quite amazing.

I'm 99% certain this was a prank. I used to make dry ice bombs all the time as a kid / teen. They are about as harmful as a firecracker, and mostly just make a lot of noise.

WHAT are they?

You insert a piece or multiple pieces of dry ice into a water bottle and seal it. The lack of oxygen eventually causes the bottle to burst loudly. There's no flame or anything of that nature.

WHO did this?

The guy they have in custody is a 22 year old male who worked an outdoor vending cart (which probably had readily available dry ice to keep frozen goods cool).

WHY on earth?

22 year old males don't always have the greatest judgement or consequence analysis. The device was placed into a trashcan, which almost 100% eliminates the risk of this actually hurting someone. He probably got bored, wanted to startle some people and get some laughs out of it.

I think this guy is a total idiot for the record, but i sincerely doubt injury was his intent.

Yup. All the security in the world wouldn't / shouldn't think anything of a Disney cast member throwing out a water bottle.

It's also quite amazing how fast they disappear with that person too. We have seen them in action also.
