Hotel to Stay at for Honeymoon (on a Budget, for a Disney Resort newbie)?

Hi everyone who I haven't met yet (which admittedly is a lot of you: I just joined recently and haven't made many posts yet!). I'm currently planning a May 2013 wedding (just less than 1 year away from right now!) that will take place in the Orlando area (it's going to be Tangled themes: I'm sure I'll have plenty of posts and ask plenty of advice on it later!), & we want to honeymoon in Disney World. I've been to Disney World 4 times before (only one as a "grown-up" 2 years ago, though) but I've never stayed in a hotel on-property or eaten at very many of the restaurants, so I'm going to need a ton of help! Luckily, it's a while off...but I figured I could start thinking about it now. So let's start with the hotel.

I definitely can't afford to stay in one of the more expensive deluxes the whole time (probably 7 nights): well I could, but as a college student going into grad school soon, that wouldn't really be savings-wise. I know AKL is one of the cheaper deluxe resorts and it definitely looks amazing: I would love to stay there, but it would definitely be a LOT of money for us on our budget, and probably mean we'd have to scrimp somewhere else, like dining, etc.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, we could stay at POP and have plenty of extra spending money, but I'm wondering if that would really be the best idea for a honeymoon. We're introverts, and would prefer something quiet, and I've heard POP is pretty noisy and boisterous. Plus, it doesn't seem very romantic. But would it be worth it to stay there, save a ton of money, and get to go to really nice dining?

I've also considered maybe staying in a Downtown Disney hotel not owned by Disney. The only perk I absolutely would want from a Disney hotel is Magical Express, and I could still find a shuttle from the airport to the hotel that would fit into our budget. The Holiday Inn on Downtown Disney property has good reviews, isn't that much per-night (less than a moderate), and has hot tubs (something I would really miss at POP!). But would I be missing out on the Disney magic and themeing by staying there?

And then there's the Moderates, which sound very, very appealing to me, especially Coronado Springs and Port Orleans French Quarter. I love the small, intimate-seeming size of FQ, and also the sprawling, romantic feel I've seen of CS, and the hammocks look lovely! Would the moderates be the compromise I'm looking for between budget and luxury, or should I splurge or save in one direction or another?

Any advice or tips are definitely appreciated, plus any hints or insider info about any of these hotels! Thanks in advance!

Well at the moment if you book through a UK travel agent if you book for 5 nights at a deluxe hotel you can get free DDP, and if you go for a moderate you can get free QSDP. I know usually the prices are around the same from GBP to USD. I also know that you dont have to be a UK resident to book through a UK agent. you need to book park tickets at the same time though and the uk tickets are different to the US tickets, we dont have MYW tickets we have 'ultimate' tickets. I know as an extra perk you get $200 free Disney money.

If you wanted to price it up through disney ul, go to the main website and down the bottom on the left change the language to English UK (not english USA).

It sounds a faff to do but if it would mean you could stay onsite in a deluxe AND get free DDP it might be worth it.

Just something else to think about Smile

Just did a dummy booking on the uk website and for AKL for 7 nights at the beginng of May, tickets for 14 days (they do a 7 day one too but its the same price), free DDP and $200 Disney money. It comes to 2,008.20 GBP which is about $3000 i think. Not sure how that compares to the US website.

Tried to compare it with the US website but for some reason the US website will only let you book up to December 2012, the UK site lets you book right through 2013 already.

My husband and I spent our honeymoon at POFQ. It was quaint, romantic, didn't break the bank, and just perfect for a honeymoon. You can't go wrong with POFQ!!!

I actually love POFQ for that type of trip. It's fairly reasonable price-wise and it's great from a scenery standpoint.

First off... CONGRATULATIONS!!!

I agree with Kris1971, and have to say that POFQ looks very romantic! If it is in your price range, I'd go with POFQ!
We'll be staying at Pop Century in September for our honeymoon. I'm pretty sure Pop Century isn't romantic, but it will have to do on our budget!

Don't under-sell Pop Century! You can go watch both Wishes and Illuminations from some of the buildings (We've walked over and done it). It's got a lot of great qualities --Plus, having money leftover for other things on your Honeymoon is romantic!

I hadn't thought of it like that, thanks!

Having stayed on property many times I would definitely recommend POFQ at the top of your list. It offers great theming, it is intimate and quiet and quite beautiful. The rooms are fine for two people. As someone else mentioned there is gorgeous scenery for photos.

For my money I found AKL far too dark throughout. I won't stay there again. You might look at Saratoga Springs if you decide to go deluxe as it is further off the beaten path and it is very pretty and quiet.

I will look forward to watching your plans unfold!

I'd recommend CSR! Besides having a great main pool area, CSR also offers many deluxe amenities at a mod price.

CSR has queen beds and the rooms are gorgeous. The rooms also have a sliding wooden door separating the sink area from the room instead of a privacy curtain like the other mods.

Amenities include a fitness center, spa, free wi-fi, tanning beds, a sauna, salon, full menu room service and a dance/night club.

The resort offers the same toiletries as the deluxes (except GF). CSR has separate shampoo and conditioner instead of the shampoo/conditioner combo at the other mods and values (a small thing, I know, but it means I don't have to pack shampoo and conditioner).

CSR has the largest hot tub of the mods and one of the longest pool slides on Disney property. The pool, slide and playground area is great and all located in one area at the main pool.

Bus service is terrific and is not shared with another resort.

My one piece of advice, if you can do it, is to choose one of the Disney property options over the Plaza hotel options. The Plaza Hotels are nice, but I really think you'll miss out on some of the Disney magic if you stay there. If this were just a trip, rather than your wedding/honeymoon, it might not matter so much. But I think for this special occasion, stick with Disney.

Having said that, I think you have some great input here! I love Robyn's creative approach. And I agree with the Port Orleans - either FQ or Riverside. I really don't think you could go wrong.

Good luck!

We stayed at Pop Century on our honeymoon! It was wonderful! It saved us enough money to spend money on plenty of souvenirs and we really didn't see too many kids! The pool by our room was super quiet! We were near the 80's pool!

Thank you all so much! Wow, so many options, and they all sound great. I think for sure I'm going to stay on property--thanks for that tip, Lizzy. It IS our honeymoon, and I do want that Disney magic. I think I'm leaning towards a moderate: in our price range, but they seem really nice. Just not sure which one yet!

Both Port Orleans French Quarter and Riverside are very romantic! You can take a carriage ride around the resort. Beautiful gardens and Riverside has the mansion buildings that look like something out of "Gone With the Wind". French Quarter has cobblestone walkways and is smaller than Riverside. You can't go wrong with either one. We've stayed at both. Both resorts have just had their rooms refurbished so everything is new and wonderful!!!

I just booked a honeymoon for a friend and she's staying at Port Orleans French Quarter! While I've personally never stayed here, I have stopped by and it's beautiful, not very noisy, and just so so romantic!! She decided to stay moderate and get the deluxe dining plan so they could have more meal options. The price wasn't too bad at all!!

Does anyone have any opinion on what's a better choice--saving money by staying at POP and being able to have unlimited dining options, extra spending money, etc., or splurging at a moderate (still saving, but definitely more than POP!) and being a little more limited on dining?

I think it just depends...are you guys planning to spend alot of time in the room? Because when we go, we spend minimal time in the room, and most of our time in the parks. open to close. then we come back to the room, shower, and sleep. and do it all again the next day. If that's what you plan on doing, then I would go with spend less on the resort, and more on the food and parks, and souvenirs.

But on the other side of that, are you guys gonna eat enough food or spend enough on souvenirs to justify saving so much for it? I love eating at nice restaurants, but when I'm eating big meals, I don't wanna eat 3 meals a day. Maybe only 2 and a snack. And there's usually a few things I wanna buy, but not THAT much.

Jessi-Thanks a lot! I've never really thought about if I'm actually saving FOR anything; I'm not really into souviniers (I'll get a few but not a ton) and I don't eat big breakfasts (just like a yogurt in my room or something), and since it's our honeymoon, we'll probably be taking it slow and doing things at a relaxing pace, so I think I've definitely decided to go with a moderate. Now I just have to decide on which one!

Thank you everyone!

I'm kinda late to this thread but have you considered renting from a DVC owner and staying at a Deluxe instead?
You could add the dining plan if you wanted it or get a TIW card and not have to worry about trying to get your money's worth out of the dining plan and coming back 10 pounds heavier.

If you were willing to stay at Saratoga Springs or Animal Kingdom in a studio depending on the season you could potentially find people willing to rent you for around $10 a point. That would be as cheap or even cheaper than a moderate hotel. I just did a rental for a friends daughter that was getting married and she stayed at SSR. They had a blast. She originally wanted AKV but since it was kind of a last minute ressie SSR was the only resort available which is usually the case. SSR has a nice spa where you could get a couples massage and you'd be near the DTD action. awesome

I would go with POR or POFQ if your booking a moderate. Both are very quiet and very beautiful, the landscaping along the banks of the Sassagoula at POR is amazing! POR also has several quiet pools amongst the mansions which are really relaxing. The boat to DTD has always been a major selling point to me because I just love it! We stayed at POR on our first ever trip and loved every second of it, I'd happily stay there again several times over! The food court has a HUGE selection of counter service options and I've heard the new desserts are delicious! They also have a lovely table service restaurant too!

As far as activities go, they have a lot on offer, from bikes to fishing excursions, boat rentals and more. Again, all awesome ways to relax together on your honeymoon!

If you can, upgrade to the regular dining plan (1TS 1CS 1SK a day), this gives you ample opportunity to experience some wonderful dining experiences without having to feel like you are doing nothing but eating all day every day. Upgrading from the quick service plan allows you to experience the more intimate table service locations which is very honeymooning indeed!

As a side note, I would also look into booking a photo pass photo shoot if it's in your budget, and you can pick any resort to have the photo shoot! It would make for an awesome addition to your wedding album! If you google around you will see some beautiful examples of shots! (Note: wear something a little matching, it looks really awesome!)

Be sure to pick up your 'just married' badges once you check in and wear them all day everyday - some his and hers wedding ears would be awesome too Smile

Wow thanks both of you! All these suggestions definitely give me a LOT to think about. I haven't looked in to renting points yet, but I definitely will. And I'm definitely planning on getting the Just Married badges and the ears!

Originally my trip was going to just be the boyfriend and I. We fell in love with CSR but also considered POFQ. The idea of renting DVC points is an interesting idea as well.

Enjoy your trip!

We stayed at AllStar Sports for our honeymoon. Mainly because I actually proposed to my wife in our room there (very long story) in fact we actually got the same room by request. The rooms are fine and the location is good, the food court was one of the better ones we've been to. So far we've been to AllStar Sports, Animal Kingdom Lodge and Port Orleans RiverSide this year we're going to Saratoga Springs. My wife always does a couple of dummy booking online, taking into consideration things like free DDP or adding DDP. Garenteed, no matter where you stay on Disney property it's always work it.
