How's Disney Doing In Your Opinion?

We have probably all seen that Disney is coming back strong this first fiscal quarter, with profits up 54%. I don't know a lot about Bob Iger, but it seems to me that he and the leadership of Disney have taken some big, big gambles...and it's looking like they're really paying off. The re-do of Disney's California Adventure, the Fantasyland Expansion, the new cruise ships, Disney Jr, the upgrade to Disney Stores - all during a recession. I'm impressed with how things are going for the company. (Aside from the fact that I think that Disney-licensed merchandise is a little too widely available (making it IMHO less "special").)

What are your thoughts? I find that I care more about the financials of this company, since I love it and prefer it. I always seem to be "rooting" for it.

Disney is so massive, and so much a part of our culture, I would find it hard to see it doing poorly at this point. If for no other reason, during economic downtimes entertainment tends to expand as people want escape. True, Disney can be expensive, but those families not hurting are still going, and people are still scraping together for the "ultimate" vacation for families.

I guess I've always seen Disney in the whole as kind of a giant machine. I like certain parts (Pixar, and sometimes the parks), but I always feel like it's not necessarily looking out for my best interests. silly

I think you're both right. But I guess my conservative nature is intrigued by what I see as giant risks they've taken during the downturn, sinking capital into so many different areas of business. And the rationale - that it costs less to do this stuff when prices are down - is terrific. I just kind of feel like I'd like to say to them - "Well played." Because I know they're waiting for my validation.

I wish they were a little more Walt and a little less Eisner, but you still have to look at how the products they put out compare with most companies. They can frustrate me, but I wouldn't want to take them for granted either.
