I've got the Disney bug!

Hi all!
I've been scoping out the boards for a few days and it looked like you all were having so much fun I had to join. My husband and I took our first Disney trip ever (We're both 33) this past August for 4 days. We covered one park each day and had a ball BUT were exhausted by the time it was all over. My feet ached so bad! Once we got home I told him that I felt like next time I would prefer to either a.) go for a short time, like a long weekend, and only do a few parks or b.) preferably stay longer and not feel obligated to do a full day at a park each day and be able to relax at the resort. My exact words "I don't get the desire to go to Disney World every year like some people do. Maybe once every few years at most."
About 3 months later I started to reminisce about how great it was, looked up more things Disney related on line and found myself telling Disney trip stories. And one day I say sheepishly to my husband "OK...I get it. I get why people want to to go to Disney all the time. I really want to go again. I've got the Disney bug!!"
My mom and I had been planning to take a trip in honor of our birthdays this year and after some pricing research and lots of talking it up, I convinced my mom to take a long weekend with me to Disney World! And so here I am! Looking up as much information as I can, reading these fine forums and feeling ridiculously excited to pick my FastPass+ and get our MagicBands.

So hello to you all and thanks for letting me join the conversations! mickey

It will be a short trip with one day of resort/Downtown Disney and then two days in the park. Because it will be my mom's first trip to DW we're going to TRY to cover all 4 parks in two days. We have a general itinerary but both agree that if we don't make it to all 4, that's all right. As she's already saying "If we want to go again, we can go next year!"

Welcome, Tink! What were your favorite parts of your first trip?

If everyone listened to their feet at the end of a trip, no one would go back to Disney!! The key is building up your feet for the adventure, taking multiple pairs of sturdy walking shoes, and being prepared to take care of your best buddies on downtime. A little bit of lotion, a soak in a warm tub, and immediately applying moleskin to any blisters (have you discovered this little miracle yet?) goes a long way toward keeping feet happy. laugh

welcome

My husband and I always take short 2-3 trips to WDW so we try to cover as much ground as possible. I have a hard time walking well as it is because I have Rheumatoid Arthritis, so a long 13+ hour day at Disney can't be brutal on my feet. My strategy to try to combat some of the pain and fatigue is to make sure that we go to a few longer "sitting" attractions about every 2 hours or less.
For example, if we are in MK for the day and we go to Tomorrowland, we might go to Monsters Inc. laugh factory and immediately follow it up with a ride on the people mover. The People mover is about 10 minutes long and the laugh factory is a 15 minute show but we are sitting for at least 20 minutes. That gives our feet a 30 minute rest but we're still enjoying WDW. If you want to get from one side of the park to the other without walking, take the train. It stops in Frontierland and Fantasyland. Or you can ride the whole way around the park, which takes about 20 minutes. It takes a little planning, but you can do WDW without completely destroying your feet.
I hope you have a wonderful vacation yay

Welcome to the forum and enjoy your stay!

Last year, I found wearing a pair of Crocs was pretty much the most comfortable way to wander around the parks - once I got past the blistering stage! I had brought a pair of walking trainers with me but found it was too hot to wear them with socks and not comfortable without, so on my first day in Orlando, I was straight down to DTD to look for a pair of flip-flops or something more comfortable!

The best way, otherwise to save aching feet, is to plan your route through the parks. If you aim to hit certain rides or can plan a route through each land, you'll find you'll spend less time wandering back and forth. Without a game plan, aching feet will be a constant reminder you're in a theme park.

Alicemouse, what is this moleskin stuff you're talking about...I certainly needed that when I blistered in the first few days! Band Aid became my best friends for a short while after that!

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone!! Being out all day it was fun coming home, sitting at my computer and thinking "OH! Let's see what my new Disney friends had to say today!"

Thank you for all the foot advice. Me and Moleskin go waaay back! I've done a 3 day/60 mile walk twice now and unfortunately had to use A LOT of it my first time. We had one positive experience thanks to our aching feet though. On our way back from a late dip in the pool one night we hobbled up to the door and our resort next door neighbor who was sitting on the balcony reading asked if we were all right! We were such a mess. We ended up having a lovely conversation with him!

My favorite part of our first trip. Hmmm that's tough!! I was really impressed by how incredibly friendly and helpful all the CMs were. I tried explaining it to family and they would say "Well that's their job!" to which I said "It's the sales people at every store's job too but THEY certainly aren't always nice!!" I know a current CM and asked her about this. SHe said "I know! Isn't it great?!" It was our anniversary so I loved all the happy wishes and kindness.

I haven't gotten any bugs this winter except this one. YAY! (Knocks on wood) clapping

Moleskin is fuzzy on one side and completely adhesive on the other side. You cut off a patch the size that you need to cover the blister and stick it to your skin. You'll never even know that you have a blister! It's like a bandaid, but instead of the non-adhesive pad sliding up and down and rubbing the blister every step you take, the entire patch adheres right to the blister. You'll never even know that there's a blister there. It's amazing!!

Hi and welcome and congrats on getting the Disney bug! I totally get what you mean about being worn out when you get back...it took us 2 days to recover after our last trip! If I had the money, I'd go for two weeks so that I could do resort days/downtime every other day between parks to rest up!

Thanks!! I'm in snow territory too! Though today I found 3 snowflake window clings that had been hiding behind one of my shades for a while in my classroom and I took them down STAT so hopefully the snow will be done soon. silly

Welcome to the forum!

I caught the Disney bug at the age of 43 and have never looked back! (partly because my neck doesn't twist as far as it used to). wheelchair
