Monorail or Ferry?

This is kind of a two parter, and I understand that there are now 4 parks, and multiple ways to get to each...but I still think it's a fun question to think about, and brings up fun memories (for me at least.)

1. Which did you take the very first time you went to MK - Ferry or Monorail? (Or have you always taken a resort shuttlebus?)

2. Which do you prefer and why?

So, here's the backstory. As I've said, we've always been more daytrippers to Disney. We'd come for a beach vacation and come to WDW for the day, and I've had passes since I moved back to Orlando in 2004. So ferry v. monorail comes up every trip. The first time we went to MK in 1978, we opted for the ferry. I was a little scared of the monorail to be honest - how in the world did it stay up there? Smile

Today, it's 6 and 1/2 dozen the other - if we're not in a hurry, we'll take the ferry, or if DD really wants to ride the train, we'll take the monorail. I guess I slightly prefer the monorail for speed (I don't care what they say - it's faster) but I think they both have their charms.

Just wondered if the rest of you have fun memories associated with unique WDW transportation.

The very first time we ever went to MK we took the ferry. It seemed more magical for me for some reason. Chip n Dale were also on board which was so cool to me.

After that we never took it again, LOL!

My husband always wants to take the monorail, to get there faster.

The first time in we took the Ferry. I would say we still take the Ferry way more than the Monorail. No real reason for this we just like the boats. In fact, our last trip we stayed at the Poly. We only rode the Monorail once during the entire week and that time we decided to do it just because we had not yet. I would also say that more often than not even when we are not staying at the Poly we park there when going into the Magic Kingdom and take the boat over.

I think everyone needs to do the Ferry at least once. Past that... ride the rail!

Were taking the shuttle service anyways and it drops us off past all of that, but sometimes we do ride the rails to say from Epcot to MK.

The first time I went in 1974 we took the Monorail, what kid doesn't think it's the coolest thing ever? These days we are pretty much half and half, my youngest loves the Monorail and he also loves the boat. Last year he made up a Monorail song while we were riding it and sang it most of the way back to St. Simons when we left! It was too cute!

I love the boats but would take the monorail as it's quicker and cooler.

The first time i took the ferry, and chip and dale were on it. I think you have to take the ferry your first time. Its just more magical. However the monorail defiantly feels faster and is perfectly fine for any other time.

I remember this SO clearly. I rode the monorail on my first trip because we went with my cousins Jeremy and Joey & they saw the monorail and FREAKED out. They were 10 & 5 at the time..I was 5 too..and they seriously thought it was a spaceship or something. My mom told me later they were convinced the monorail WAS Disney World. It's kind of a joke in our family.

the first time I went I took the bus Sad
we've never had a reason to be at the Transportation Center. We WERE there once though..we went searching for Property Control for some shopping and we were told we had to take a city bus.. so we went there followed the directions that the very confused CM gave us.. and we STILL couldnt find it. So we went back to the Transporation Center and took the Ferry back to MK. Wasted a good 2.5 hours on that excursion. Sad

I've ridden the monorail though because I wanted to see the 5 legged goat, and also to get to Ohana. But at the beginning of the day and the end of day.. I dunno.. it seems like the monorail would get packed like Sardines and would be sooo uncomfortable!

Is that how it gets? because if yes, then I'd either take the ferry (if that isnt sardine like) or I'd just wait til the crowd thinned out some

The monorail does tend to get more packed, although the ferry gets to be SRO. IMO at these really crowded times, it really is just as fast to take the ferry.

I mean ferries are nice and everything, but it's the Monorail. It's an icon. I've had lots of people ask me about the Monorail there, I've never heard anyone mention the ferry...

Now I feel kind of bad for the ferry...maybe I'll take it next time.

But can we do it if we take the bus to the park?

Yup...

Say were over at Epcot and decide to go to MK. We take the monorail to MK parking lot, get out from there and take the ferry
