Portable Phones on Disney Cruises

For those that have been on Disney cruises before, is this a big deal? I was excited until I realized it wasn't what I was thinking it was...

What would you use it for - to track down your kids/spouse/SO/friends?

It's probably one of those things that you'll never actually get. You'll just wish you had it once per trip. Meanwhile if you actually go get one you'll carry it around for days wondering why you are. It sounded good at first though, didn't it?

When we go on vacation we go as a couple and we do everything TOGETHER (and that's the way we want it) so it would be totally useless for us. In fact in all our Disney trips together the ONLY time I can remember that we were apart for even a short time was when my wife went to the Spa at SSR.

Yep! I read that thinking WOW and then thought Oh.... I was expecting "cheap way to make phone calls back to the mainland," but, alas, it's a walkie talkie that's been glorified. laugh

We seperate sometimes, but very rarely. I suspect it's most useful for couples with kids.

I agree we don't really separate yet...I was thinking along the lines of bali..that you could make calls back to the mainland..

I would have LOVED that on our cruise. Not for each other, but for all the people we met on the cruise. People were barely in their rooms, so you often had to luck running into each other. Would have been great just to call them!

I agree it's awesome, too. I wouldn't mind a little alone time (spoken like the mother of two little kids) and the last time we went on a cruise, it was with both sets of parents. I kept trying to shoo his away ("Really. Here's the Navigator. PICK something. Anything.") And maybe they would have been willing to go had they been assured of easy contact with Baby Boy.

And no, I'm not speaking of my son.

I bet when groups go together those are hugely handy. Basically if you're party is ever split up that could be a life-saver.

If you lose or damage one of those Wave Phones, it's a $250 automatic charge on your account! Two of them are in your room when you arrive. I have heard you can somehow opt out of them on the Payment Authorization Form upon check-in, and that's what I intend to do!

Huh, that's interesting. I would be SO grumpy if I got charged 250 for that!! Let us know if it works!

Supposedly there have been a few problems with some people getting charged when they should not have been. I guess it gets resolved in the end, but I don't like it. Even if the phones are fine and in your room when you leave the ship at the end of the cruise, if anything happens to them between then and the next arriving guests, it's deemed your fault and you will later end up with a charge on the card you used to pay your onboard account. I don't like it!

The wave phones were great for us. We had 10 people and 3 cabins throughout the ship. The texting option was great!
