Soarin' Crashes?

Last Friday evening, Dec 12, 2008, I was at Soarin' and saw probably the worst example of projection at Disney that I've ever seen. This is a repeat of the last time I visited the attraction in May 2008. There were vertical lines on the screen and dust/dirt could be seen floating here and there as the show progressed. Occasionally there was a sharp movement in the image and the lines would change but not go away. At the conclusion of the ride, I approached one of the attendants and told her of my disappointment. She stated that they had "cleaned the film" but that "the screen in front of the lens is dirty and that can't be changed until we shut down." Well, in my opinion, they should have skipped a cycle and cleaned that darned screen (I notice that the combination of an "r" and an "n" appears strikingly similar to an "m" in small case - sorry)! The fact that she was quick with what was obviously a scripted reply indicates to me that this is not an infrequent or unknown problem with Soarin'. The fact that the same problem has occurred on my two most recent visits in succession also indicates that the problem is not "isolated." My suggestion for anyone who wants the Soarin' experience would be to check the "health" of the ride before you waste your time standing in what is a LONG walk if not a long line even WITH a "fast" pass. The "sick" Soarin' isn't worth the effort as the effect is totally spoiled. Disney needs to know that we, the guests, are NOT idiots and know when there is a problem. If I were them, I would be ashamed to let the attraction continue to operate with a problem of this magnitude. I won't bother with Soarin' again until I know I'll see a good show!

fjfuchs, did you notice how many screens were affected? Soarin' is shown on several different screens in several different viewing areas--if all of the screens in front of all of the lenses are dirty, that's quite a coincidence.

I knew(assumed) that there were at least two theatres of Soarin'. Perhaps coincidentally, I have always gone to the end of the L O N G walkway and gone to the left. I do think there is another line that goes to the right? I have seen no other branches off the walkway to the left from the L O N G one. So, in answer to your question, no, I don't know if the problem is in more than one theatre. Perhaps some other readers of this forum could comment?

There's concourse A and concourse B, though I'm not certain if there are 2 theaters in each direction (totaling 4). It would be quite a coincidence if you'd encountered the same bad lens on all of your trips. And I just can't understand Disney having a "pat" answer regarding something that sounds so easy to fix--especially if you've encountered the problem twice in 8 months.

Would that lens thing be easy to fix do you think?

Anybody else experiencing this? I don't want to wait in that line if the screen's messy.

No problems when we rode it, although we always went to the right, never the left, so who knows if there was a problem with the screen down there.

Our rides were pure magic...as always. Most amazing ride ever!!!

They need to switch to a digital projector to fix the problem. They are running the same film over and over again and it is bound to get dirt/dust on the film. A digital projection would prevent dust getting on the film.

Btw, there are only 2 theaters; concourse A and B. Each has 3 seating sections with 3 rows each. I think each cycle seats 99 people.

Welcome, dlaushey!

Thanks for the insight. Shocking that Disney isn't running the highest technology available...I wonder why!

The two theater explanation makes sense. My mental map is remembering now.
