Tell me all about Saratoga Springs

We are staying there a month today ( yay ) but I don't really know much about it. I've requested Grandstand based on the little info I've read. Anyone have any tips on the resort? What's the food like there? Is it worth getting a refillable mug?

I goof on SSR a lot for fun. I stayed there twice. I'll never remember the names of the buildings. Once near the golf course, really in the middle of nowhere. The second time right across from the main pool. That was much better, because the pool and hot tub was right there as was Artists Palette. The pool is nice. Artist Palette is pretty good-really good chili if I recall. The Turf Club is supposed to be very good but I was never at the resort except for before the park and after the park. To me it's just not nice enough to hang out there.

If they still have the recordings on the bus telling you about SSR and it's theming- it may drive you mad. Every time you get on a bus you get this spiel about what SSR is about.

BTW there isn't a horse to be found at this equestrian themed resort.

But you'll still have fun. It's in Disney World...almost.

I remember sailing doon the Sassagoula river from PORS to downtown when someone on the boat asked the captain " What's that place over there." Whilst pointing at SSR...And as quick as a flash he replied " Oh that's The Saratoga Springs Old Folks Home." I couldn't help burst out laughing.. wheelchair

All I can tell you is that hubby loved Saratoga Springs last November and wants to stay there again someday.

Oh, and there is a horse statue, at least. Hubby sent a photo.

The Granstand is close-ish to the DTD boat, so that's convenient and I think it seems closer to the main building than the other "outlying" areas. We didn't eat here at all, so I can't speak to the food. I didn't care for the counter service set-up. It shares space with the gift shop, so the layout of both is hectic and confusing. I think the shop is the weakest of all of the resort shops in selection and convenience. The lobby is very nice and there are lots of great places to people-watch. We didn't swim, but the pools looked nice--interesting, nice slides, nice deck areas, not terribly crowded.

Haven't posted in ages, but I have stayed at Saratoga Springs several times (my parents are DVC members and it is their home resort)! We would stay there because it is usually the only one available last minute, so like you! Laughing out loud I think the lobby is very pretty and walking around the grounds is lovely also. We always always request the Springs because it is closest to the main building, but the Grandstand is fairly close also, from what I remember. The springs is also right next to the pool, which I love! we would find ourselves hanging out there with a couple drinks a lot Smile

My biggest negative is definitely bus transportation-- there are a ton of stops-one for each section? i remember it taking forever to either get out of or get back to the resort. Renting a car is definitely a good idea!

I have eaten at the Turf Club a couple times, the food is pretty good, but I prefer just walking or taking the boat the DTD for eats! I loved being able to use the walkway to come home to SS, but it sounds like it will still be closed. I remember artists palate being pretty limited, food wise. You can refill your mug there, so might be worth it!

It is definitely my least favorite of the deluxe because of location (I love boardwalk for ability to walk to EPCOT and HS) but we have always had a great time at SS, and like everyone has said, you're in Disney, so it will be fabulous! clapping

Haven't stayed there, but I've heard the actual resort is really pretty. Several friends have stayed and they seemed to like it - other than only have a bus as transport. (Except for DTD)

Thanks so much for all the info everyone!

I would def think of hiring a car if this wasn't so much of a budget trip, that would make life so much easier - I am totally going to miss stopping at walmart and picking up things that we can get back home (especially as only this week I ran out of honey mustard! might have to stoop to pinching the ones at the Disney counter services lol). I do have a few friends who live in Orlando though so maybe one of those might take pity on me and bring me some things or take me over to pick some up.

I have friends who ONLY stay at SSR as they love it so much so I guess it cant be so bad crossfingers When I first saw pics of the new villas at Grand Floridian I was like 'meh, they don't look that great! they look old fashioned' but then when i saw them I fell in love so maybe I will like the place when I've actually stayed there. I've been in a few times to the DVC preview centre so I know the kinda feel. Either way, yeah i'll still be in DISNEY so it cant be bad Wink

SSR is a lot nicer than I expected it to be. I'm perfectly content owning there, though I do plan to do the 7-month swap as much as possible until we've gotten to try every DVC resort!!
