What are grownups?

When I joined this board I assumed it was mostly folks that no longer had young families that they took to WDW. Except, of course, grandchildren. Am I right ?

I think we've got a mix here -- some folks who are just starting out and don't have kids yet, some who never had kids, some singles, and some empty nesters. We've even got several on the board who are married, have kids, and are simply "adults who like Disney World."

It's a mish-mosh, but it works! Lots of different perspectives.

There's definitely a mix. I think there are a fair number "pre kid" people as well as "post kid." I think the main qualifying characteristic is passion about Disney.

Yeah, there's a big mix here. Personally, I'm getting married in two weeks (woohoo!) so no kids yet, but we will within the next five years or so (hopefully). Still, we're both adults, and both LOVE Disney (hence the first stop on our honeymoon!)

My wife and I are pre-kid, but love Disney and intend to make it a life-long 'obsession' biggrin

There are quite a few "with kid" too. I think someone once said the defining characteristic was that the person didn't claim they "Only went to Disney for the kids."

Now that's just crazy talk -- only with kids!

I went about five years ago with a friend who HATED it. The heat, the constant walking, the kids - she wasn't a fan AT ALL. She still makes fun of me for going on my honeymoon there. Luckily, Caitie (obviously) loves it as well!

It's always nice to find someone who's as insane as we are to share our lives with Wink

Just to add a bit of levity----
We have 4 grand children ranging from 20 yrs old to 24 yrs old. They all claim to be 'grownups'. I just scratch my head and say "If you say so!".

And then there are those of us who feel that Disney is no place for "kids" in the FIRST place! silly

All our kids and grandkid love WDW. Now that they find they have to pay their own way they don't do it very often. Kids are funny that way.

Subvet -- stop me if you've already answered this, but does your name mean that you were a sailor? My brother was a nuke for many years, stationed in Pearl Harbor. Just wondering...

To answer some questions.
Yes,! Our family always did a whole long weekend trip 2 times a year. That hasn't happened in a few years since the grand kids all graduated school. Some of us still make the trip together but not all the way it used to be. That's life.

Yes! I am a Navy veteran having spent 8 years in service as a submariner. All old diesel boats. No nukes.

My wife is now undergoing treatment for cancer for the fourth time since 2002. Our joy is getting to WDW 4 times a year till our time together runs out. The Dr's., hospital and druggists have taken just about all of our retirement money so we always go to WDW on a tight budget.
You'd be surprised to know that 2 people can have a great time at WDW resorts for less than $300.00 for 6 days not including the room. We have done it many times. Most often we spend more but not much. You don't have to go to the theme parks at all and still not have enough time to do all you want.
This kind of takes us out of the norm of those who plan a yearly vacation and save money for it.
We did that when we were younger.

You all have a "magical day',

I commend you, sir. I think it's something to be proud of to see the value in enjoying the time you have together (and our time on this Earth for that matter), however long or short that time may seem. Hope you have many more years of good times to come.

That would be me. Smile I went to WDW before we had kids and will go with or without them laugh

I think there are 2 types of parents who go to WDW. One set are those who go for the kids, b/c the kids love it, etc... Then thre are those of us who go because we love it and that our kids do too is just a cherry on top of the sundae of life! muchlove

I also fall under that category . . no kids yet, but when I do . . I will still go . .with or without the kids, because I love it . . in fact I am sure I will make some trips without so I don't have to watch kids and can run around like one myself.

Disney World is the best treatment for cancer as far as I'm concerned. I've posted before about visiting with my close friend and roommate during her chemo and after surgeries. Health insurance should cover that place. mickey

I am sorry to hear about your wife. I have personally lost 2 family members to cancer, my grandfather and my father (technically he was my step-father, but he raised me). I still struggle with the loss, for personal reasons, but it makes me so happy and sad to hear that you are able to take those trips and enjoy each other. I wish that I had had an opportunity to do something like that with my family.

Thank you for sharing this with us.

You should write a book about getting the magic cheaply. I think it's
really wise to ditch the parks if you're cost conscious. You can still
get a lot of the fun and remove a lot of the cost.

You guys are going in September for the next time, right? It would be great if you could sneak into EPCOT somehow for Food and Wine festival. I wonder how much a single day after 4 pass would be.

That does hit on one of the drags of Disney World is that if someone's not terribly mobile it's hard to get into the park even for short trips. I suppose you can get one of those scooters or whatever, but some people just don't want to get involved with them. I think you can have a great time without going in the parks and save yourself a lot of hassle if you have someone who's having trouble getting around.

We have no problem getting around Disney Resorts. My wife has a very efficient power chair. All the WDW transportation ( except for a very few of the smaller boats) are set up for handicap. We don't go to the theme parks simply because we enjoy going hotel hopping more. Also we are in our 70s and the rides don't have the appeal for us any more. We just love the whole resort magic and leave the park thrills to you younger folks. Disney is wonderful for all ages all over the WDW resort.
Hope we get to see some of you while we are at Pop Century 9-6-09 to 9-12-09.

Well it's also great for saving money to ditch the park ticket. It's too bad I can't get to some of the restaurants without a park ticket or I'd be tempted to try a park-less vacation myself.

There are probably near 100 restaurants in WDW outside of the parks. At least more than you would go to in a week stay. I know because we go to many. All the resorts have top quality places to eat and some have many. There are many places you can eat for less than $25.00 @ including tip. We prefer to keep our food cost under $20.00. For Disney that's pretty good. We are old enough not to be impressed with opulence. Doesn't mean it's not fun but we don't require it . It's all about soaking up the magic anyway.

What a great picture from Trail's End! I'd love to hear how you like it; I've been for breakfast a long time ago, but that's it. I've heard they've made some changes!

Also, I fell for resort hopping early in the game. Disney puts so much thought into themeing those resorts. Just walking into the Wilderness Lodge is breathtaking for me.

Hi,

I'm 45 years old and will be 46 on August 10. I'm just an overgrown child (I hesitate to use "kid" as I am not a baby goat). Never married, as I feel that I'm better at being Mr. Left than at Mr. Right (or maybe just afraid of commitment, as my first of three ex-girlfriends once told me), I spend a great deal of time by myself and often act like someone whose age is the sum of the digits in mine.

Trails End is great. We met a CM (waiter) there when he first started 15 years ago and have had him as ours server at least twice a year, lately 4 times a year, ever since. They haven't changed much at all in all that time. The food is very good and plenty of it and the price is reasonable.
Like I have stated, we are old folks. If you want to enjoy resort hopping you must have patience. We are in no hurry for our lives to be over so a long ride on a buss is just another thrill in Disney World. If you can't find the specialness of riding in any Disney transportation then resort hopping will not be for you.
Every thing is magic in WDW if you just allow it to happen.
Sounds like you already have.
Later,
subvetss
PS: The waiters name is Gary.
