Whatever Happened to Del Toro's Haunted Mansion?

Quote:
Hey, remember when Disney and Guillermo del Toro made the big announcement at Comic-Con two summers ago that they would be rebooting Haunted Mansion? Yeah, I'd practically forgotten about it too. But now GDT has provided an update on the project, and it sounds like it could still happen.

"I delivered my last draft five weeks ago," he tells Collider. "I have a meeting with [Disney] in three weeks. I know they like the screenplay. ... That's what I know. I know their reaction to the draft was good. We have a bunch of conceptualist art, but you never know ... to predict anything else is hard for me to know."

Del Toro adds that while he joined the film as a writer and producer, he thinks Disney is holding out for him to direct. Which isn't going to happen quite yet as he's still got to finish up his highly anticipated giant robots/giant monsters flick Pacific Rim for next summer. And beyond that, "I don't know what I'm going to do next," he says.

Oh yeah, completely forgot about this movie. His visual work is stunning, I hope he gets as much involved as possible. He might also drag Ron Perlman along, and that would be fun.

Wooo Hoo!!!! yay I was starting to think this movie would never see the light of day. So glad there's still a chance. What would you prefer, the mansion exterior to look like the one at DL or WDW? My vote is for the mansion at WDW. That Dutch Gothic style looks scarier than the Antebellum at DL. Both are great but that's just my preference. What are your thoughts?

Yay! So excited to hear that this still is in the works and hasn't been forgotten about! My vote would be for WDW Haunted Mansion, too.

Ooo that's a good question! I like the DL facade so much better than the one at WDW. I don't feel like I'm walking into a house in WDW for any reason, it's just something up there on the hill. However, since they used the DL facade in the Comedy HM movie, I think I would prefer them to use the WDW facade for this one.

I'd say the Florida one, but I'd also want him to take liberties with the aesthetics of it, kind of like he did with Hellboy. Del Toro is one of the few directors and designers who I trust to change something because I know that even if it looks different than the source material it will still be fantastic and give it a new life.

Basically, I'd like to see a Pirates of the Caribbean thing, where although it's technically based on the ride, the movie does what it needs to make to it its own story. (As long as they don't feel the need to change the ride after the movie...)

Man... I feel like I'm the only one for the DL one. That one to me just looks creepier. Especially set in in a swampy forrest. I don't want this to be R... but I want a super creeeeeeeeepy Haunted Mansion movie. Look what they have done with PG13 movies over the past 10 years. I hope Disney lets del Toro do the movie, because I think he can bring the correct scariness to this flick. Especially if this is centered around the Hat Box Ghost.

Do you think the "Hat Box Ghost" will be for the Haunted Mansion movie what "Capt. Jack Sparrow" has done for Pirates of the Caribbean?

It's possible, but a lot of Capt Jack was Johnny Depp's charisma. Who do you think would make a fantastic Hat Box Ghost?

Maybe Jonathan Rhys Meyers (Henry VII -The Tudors) or Cillian Murphy (Scarecrow from Batman Begins)? They can play really creepy guys. Both excellent actors in their own right.

John Malkovich for me. I think he almost looks like him too...
