Totally cool! From what I've read that you've written, I think you're PERFECT for DVC!

At first I was thinking, no way. Florida is a long way away from PA - will we really go there every year? Then I realized, I was there in 2008, 2009 and I was already starting to plan going back again in 2009 and still trying to figure out how to afford another trip in 2010! Uhhhh, yea, I think I've been hit with Disney fever!

I think this is a wonderful fit for my family - with 3 small kids - being able to basically give them Disney every year muchlove

Plus, if you do want a down year, you can save those points to apply to a BIGGER vacation (cruise?) the following year, OR you could do something totally different. We've used our points in the Concierge Collection to stay in Washington, DC and in Hawaii.

For fun, take the number of points you are planning on buying and double them (your current year plus either the year before banked and the following year borrowed), then triple them (both of the previous) and see what you could do. You will be amazed!

You'll also be amazed at the difference in the amount of points needed by season, so play with your schedule and make it as flexible as you can.

For example, I'm looking at a four night cruise right now this fall. For the low end oceanview cabin, the point range varies from 109 to 179 points per person, with seven different categories, depending on the time of year used. (Exactly why most of our cruises are done during hurricane season!!) laugh

Maybe you could explain something to me wink
You mentioned points per person, is that just for cruises? When I look at a points chat for DVC - BLT, for instance, I see, for April 19 - 30 time frame in 2010, for a 2 bedroom it shows Sun - Thurs, 58 points for a MK view - are those points per person or just per night? I was under the impression it was per night?

I also see for that time and view Fri - Sat is 88 points - I know weekends are higher, so tat makes sense but what about weekly? Weekly shows 466 - is that for a Sun - Sun stay? I mean, if you add it all up it comes to 466 - so no special deals if you stay all week? LOL - Could you move to a different view or something to make it cheaper on the weekend?

I'm not a DVC expert but I think you are right on both of your questions:

1.) Cruises are different because they have all that stuff included per person (MT will have to confirm since I know even less about cruises)

2.) I don't think you get any bulk discounts for longer stays. Probably since that's what DVC was geared towards in the first place.

#1 Correct. I think this and maybe some of the specialty adventures are the ONLY things priced person.

#2 Correct. The only way the point total will change during a long stay is if you go from one rate time frame into another during your stay.

wow - a week at BLT with a MK view for a 2 bedroom is over 400 points! I thought I was going to be okay with buying 320 points! silly

You may think this defeats the purpose of buying into DVC, but consider spending your weekend in another hotel NOT using your points.

You can see incredible savings by not saying in a DVC property on the weekends, although in 2010 they have adjusted that somewhat.

Yes that is why my wife and I are very lucky, all the kids are in their 30's so we can get away with a Studio for 2 weeks and depending on where we stay we can even have a few points left over to bank.

I know people do that but my gawd - to have to unpack and then pack up 3 small kids and move from one hotel to another - eek

Then you either buy more points or stay six days.

Yep, I do.

I'd love to spend a week using my points in a King Kamehameha room at the Poly, but I don't have enough points.

My theory applies there as well and I'm not buying more points. (well, until Powerball and I see 'eye to eye')

Great thing about DVC is that you don't HAVE to miss it. You can use points to stay there, although it is expensive.

I'm working on a plan right now for a fall cruise/visit combo. A LOT of things have to fall into place for it to happen, but I've got my fingers crossed.

A while back we talked about this trip, since i'd be taking my father who will be 82 this summer. It would start at Disney, then on to the 4 night DCL cruise, then back to Disney to wind up.

I want this one to be memorable, so I'm juggling points and cash and all that stuff. As it stands now, we'd do a couple of days at one of the DVC resorts, then the cruise and end up for four nights at the Poly.

The Poly was my dad's favorite up until the day we joined DVC, and I'm going to surprise him and not even tell him thats where we'll be staying until the morning we go.

And gang, TRUST me... if down the road this happens YOU GUYS will be the first to know. yay

UL would it be possible for you to kindly hold off winning the lottery for a couple of weeks? You see I had my heart set on winning it next week. I would like a new paint job for my Vette biggrin

Oh my gosh - I really hope all goes well for you! I wanted to give my grandma a memorable trip - that was last year, when she wound up at celebration hospital sad
My grandma will be 87 this year - she's doing well now but she tells me she'd never go anywhere again, she's too old sad

What are they getting a point for that?

I still think if I was buying today I'd go aftermarket and live with the seven month reservation window.

One plus for BLT right now is that their maintenance fees are quite low I think. High $3 I think.
