Thanks everyone Now onto Day 4!
Day 4 (Monday, April 30)
Time to hit up Animal Kingdom!
Again, no opening ceremony. We used to be greeted by Safari Mickey. That was fun.
Our adventure had us head right to Expedition Everest.
What a gorgeous day for a Yeti attack! We walked right on, no wait. The only down side is that you don't get to explore all the fun little showcases. I did take note of a teapot that had an elephant trunk for the spout! I hadn't noticed that before.
Since one ride is never enough, we did another - again, no wait.
When we walked by It's Tough to Be A Bug, we noticed that the 2 CMS we turning people away. WE overheard them telling a guest it was closed for refurbishment!
You know how I research and plan, and a refurb at ITTBAB was NOT on my refurb list! We had planned on seeing this at some point, but now it was off the list.
We weren't really interested in any more rides (we're getting old - the safari is too bumpy for us, and you can't pay me enough to do Dinosaur ever again. And we weren't in the mood to get soaked at the Rapids.) So off to Pangani Exploration Trail!
It was so very peaceful and quiet (and cool!)
We took a nice, leisurely stroll through the place, taking time to talk to the CMs and ask questions about various birds, plants, animals, etc. They really do have so much knowledge, it's a shame to let it go to waste!
When we came upon the gorillas, we noticed that they were very active! And not in a playful kinda way! We overheard a CM telling a small group there was a small power struggle going on for the attention of a female. One would chase the other away, then come over and just stare at us.
It was creepy and scary! I had visions of a perfect leap-frog across the ravine and right next to me! So we moved on.
For more low-key activity, we then took the train over to Rafiki's Planet Watch.
We spotted Minnie working hard at her desk job:
While we were there in the main center we watched them work on a turtle:
They were explaining to us that 2 years ago, when Florida experienced a longer than usual period of frost/freeze, some of the turtles had their shells exposed to the freezing temps and they got frost-bitten. To save them, they had to remove the shell and allow it to complete regenerate. This particular turtle also had it's eye pecked out by birds! Good grief!
They were removing the gauze and checking the status of the shell re-growth. This guy was doing pretty well, at least shell-wise.
Then it was off to the Petting area! I love the petting area. I always make some new friends:
With that completed, we headed back to the main land and took in the Lion King. Always a crowd pleaser!
On to my favorite activity - lunch at the Yak & Yeti.
I always look forward to this place. Every trip, we had such a good experience - the food, the service. And this time did not disappoint.
We were pleased that the place was not freezing, like last time. It was very pleasant, we were seated within 5 minutes of arriving for our ADR. YAY!.
As I posted over in the Food post, Joe had the Seared Miso Salmon, and I had the Kobe Beef Burger with shoestring fries. OMG soooo good! And for dessert, we split the Mango Pie. I was in my very happy place!
While we were at lunch, Joe saw a tweet about Bug's life opening now! Since we were confused, we did some quick research and found out it was closed just last week, because 3 branches from the Tree of Life unexpectedly just fell off! So they closed it in order to complete a full inspection. Guess they just finished the inspection and declared it safe.
But, by now we were ready for our afternoon break, so we headed back to the room for some R & R.
When I got my cortisone shot in the knee before we left, the PA that gave it to me was telling us they just got back from Disney World, and as we were talking, he was asking of we ever saw Nemo at AK. We told him we never did, and never really were interested. But he told us we HAD to go see it because it was just so well done!
So, we noted that there was a 5:00 showing, and decided to head back after our break to catch it.
And we are sure glad we did! It was a great show! And how they do those above-head creatures is just amazing.
It was just like the PA said - you know there are humans their doing all the motions, but you just kinda don't even see them because you are mesmerized by the movements and flow of the creatures! Very cool.
After the Nemo show, we headed over to AKL to look around and explore. As we walked to the entrance, we spotted one of my favorite Disney buses:
How fun! Mickey is on the other side.
AKL is so neat - we discovered more things there that we never noticed before either! Rocking chairs:
...animals on the savannah:
...and of course the inside is gorgeous:
We could have parked it there for a while and been content!
After we finished here, we headed back over to DTD for sandwiches at Earl of Sandwich. Joe got The Original (Roast Beef) and I got the Ham & Swiss, and we traded halves so we could each have a little of both.
We topped it off with some ice cream from Ghirardelli's. I tried their "infused" milk shake. It's infused with a candy bar. It sounded more glamorous that it actually was. Basically, they simply tossed a candy bar into the blender when making the shake. That's "infused".
I didn't really care for it - it left the shake with grainy bits of chocolate, and I have texture issues with grainy milkshakes, even if the graininess is from a chocolate bar.
Of course, I drank it all....but that was not my point!
A trip to World of Disney capped off the evening, followed by a visit to the pups before calling it a night.
