That was however one of the first things I thought might happen after all in said and done.
Such a sad, tragic incident.

I have to say, I think the Monorail's safety record is quite excellent, so I'm not sure any changes need to be made. I certainly think it says great things about the Disney community that they are so involved in wanting to be supportive. To me the saddest part is how young the CM was.
Just in case you're interested, here is the listing of previous deaths inside the Disney parks. I didn't see a rather famous one of ten or so years ago when a lady drowned in a drainage ditch at the WDW parking lot. Maybe it has to be inside the parks to qualify.http://www.snopes.com/disney/parks/deaths.asp
Interesting point in that all of these people were disobeying the rules.
Okay, I have to ask: How the heck did she end up in a drainage ditch in the parking lot in the first place?
Those deaths were very gruesome. Why do people do stupid things?

Well the problem is 99% of the time when you do foolish things, nothing bad happens to you. So you get the idea reinforced that people are "overly cautious" and build bad habits. Sadly you only have to be wrong once.

This is so sad My heart goes out to the family and friends of the cast member who lost his life.
So sad. I pray for that young man's family. It seems like they are already running again so I hope they know what the issue was.

Here is another good post by a current Monorail Pilot. He does a good job of piecing together the events that occurred that morning.

Here is a video done about Austin approximately three weeks before the accident. A family riding in the nose of the monorail taped this.

Very good information in those links. The one with the video, is very stirring. Be advised, if you're emotional you may want to skip the video and accompanying story. It's great to see him doing what he enjoyed and making others happy, but seeing that really makes it hit home. Made me cry, more than a little.
Also, it looks like they had just returned this past Saturday from their vacation. Don't know, but given that fact the video could have been just last week.
There are several tweets floating around (but no details) about the fact that it appears that Austin tried to put his monorail in reverse to escape the one that was bearing down on him.
It is a slippery slope when you start physically memorializing people who died. Personally, I abhor the "roadside memorials" that people put up where there were car wrecks. I brought this up because ultimately Disney should do something to remember this kid. Even something as simple as a bronze plaque with his face on it at the monorial station.
Knowing Disney, they'll probably put something in a less "public" place, but they should do SOME-thing!

All good points, MT. And it sounds like they've now released the primary investigation information that he was trying to put the monorail in reverse when the other missed its switch to the different track.
How terrifying for him.
