I was able to register on Day 3, so I am in the beta testing period, but I'm still waiting for the Welcome email to be able to log in and do anything. Out of the million people who registered, they've only let in about 20,000 people so far, it's driving me craaaaazy. I hate waiting!

Hi,

Old school guy here again. I still listen to a lot of CDs and tend to buy new ones in bunches. I have between 1,700 and 1,800 in my collection. Today on my day off I went to Tunes Used and New CDs and bought a two-CD set called Knebworth: The Album, which I haven't listened to yet. In the mail I got two separate CDs from Amazon. One is a Latin jazz CD by Cuban-born clarinettist/saxophonist Paquito D'Rivera called *Tico! Tico!* on Chesky Records disc JD34, recorded in New York in the summer of 1989. Excellent CD showcasing D'Rivera's mastery of Cuban and South American musical elements in a jazz framework.

Now playing is a disc on the import (from Amsterdam, the Netherlands) label Channel Classics called *Chamber Music From Theresienstadt*, CCS 1691. The following is from the liner notes accompanying the CD. In English Terezin, this was a garrison town about 60 km (about 39 miles) north of Prague, then Czechoslovakia, built in 1780 by Emperor Josef II. After the Nazis invaded Czechoslovakia in 1939, it became the Theresienstadt (Terezin) concentration camp; both a way station to the gas chambers of Auschwitz, and a vehicle for Nazi deception. Many of Europe's finest artists and musicians were imprisoned here, their art and music strictly censored. The recording to which I am now listening presents four works by Czechs Gideon Klein (born 12/6/1919 in Prerov, Czechoslovakia; gassed at Auschwitz, 1/1945) and Viktor Ullmann's (born 1/1/1898 in Teschen, Czechoslovakia; gassed, with his wife Elizabeth, at Auschwitz, 10/16/1944) String Quartet Opus 46 No. 3. Though these works employ joyful Czech folk melodies, the slow movements evoke the despair of waiting to be killed by the Nazis. Recorded in an Amsterdam church in mid-January 1991 by the Hawthorne String Quartet (which is four members of the Boston Symphony Orchestra) with pianist Virginia Eskin (on Gideon Klein's Sonata for Piano), this is unique music of the spiritual resistance to the Nazis. The liner notes indicate that the recording is dedicated to the memory of the more than 140,000 Jews deported to Theresienstadt between 11/24/1941 and late 5/1945.

As I write this paragraph, now playing is the first CD of the two-CD *Knebworth Album*, chronicling a June 30, 1990 festival before 120,000 people on the grounds of Knebworth House near the town of Knebworth in Hertfordshire, east of London, UK. The concert raised more than 3 million pounds for the Nordoff-Robbins Center for Music Therapy and featured "Silver Clef Award" winners such as Tears For Fears, Status Quo, Cliff Richard and the Shadows, Robert Plant, Jimmy Page, Phil Collins, Genesis, Eric Clapton, Paul McCartney, Dire Straits, Elton John and Pink Floyd.

The last disc in my player at this time is another disc on the Chesky Records label, *Caminho De Casa* ("Pathway Home" in Portuguese), the third album by jazz flutist Herbie Mann and his band Jasil Brazz and their first on Chesky. Recorded in mid-March, 1990 in New York and released with a catalog number of JD40, this CD finds Mann and the band exploring the complex rhythms of Brazilian jazz. I love this music, and this recording is an excellent example of it.

My apologies for a long absence from the forums and for possibly boring you with the preceding detailed description of my latest musical acquisitions. With no Disney (or any other) trips on the horizon, due in large part to the purchase of new windows and a new sliding door, I feel I have little recent to add to Disney discussions; though I know that I am among friends here.

Jim

Good to see you back Jim.

Knebworth is only about 40 minutes drive from where I'm sat while typing this (at work) biggrin small world eh? wink
It's to the north of London rather than to the east.

Love DMB!

I've recently discovered the Pandora App on my phone (I know I know...so behind.) So...listening to a Chris Tomlin station. On our Blu Ray player, we have a couple of others set up to play...LOVE taking the guess work and monotony out of music listening.

Hi!

More new stuff!

*Hans Krasa (born 11/30/1899 in Prague, Czechoslovakia; gassed 10/17/1944 in Auschwitz)--Composers From Theresienstadt 1941-1945: Brundibar (children's opera in two acts) (tracks 1-15); Czech Songs for Children's Chorus with string quartet accompaniment arranged by Frantisec Domazlicky (tracks 16-23). Recorded June, 1992 in Prague by the Disman Radio Children's Ensemble.

*Edward MacDowell (born 1860, New York, NY; died, after being run over by a horse-drawn carriage, 1908 in Boston, MA): Piano Concertos 1 in A Minor Opus 15 and 2 in D minor Opus 23; Hexentanz (Witches Dance) Opus 17 No. 2; Romance For Cello and Orchestra Opus 35. This is new to my collection and is part of Naxos' American Classics series.

*Georg Philipp Telemann (1681-1767): Trumpet Concertos performed by trumpeter John Wallace with the English String Orchestra conducted by William Boughton. This was actually a re-purchase after my first copy was damaged by my previous CD player.
