Characters in Flight To Remain Closed

We reported earlier this week about the iconic Characters in Flight balloon experience in Downtown Disney being grounded after a mishap with a similar balloon in Hong Kong. It now looks like there could be a significant wait before the experience is back up and running.

An email released this week by Aerophile, the company who runs Characters in Flight in Orlando as well as similar balloons in Hong Kong and Disneyland Paris, stated there are no immediate plans to re-inflate the balloon. From the email sent by company president Jerome Giacomon:

The balloon of Orlando was scheduled to be replaced in November. Instead of re-inflating it after the inspection - which is a significant cost - we have decided to take it down for now and expedite the replacement work. We don't know when it will reopen yet, but we hope soon.

Aerophile grounded both the Downtown Disney and Disneyland Paris balloon experiences after a recent accident with its Hong Kong balloon resulted in passenger injuries. Five people were injured when that balloon fell from 180 feet in the air as a result of an air leak.

Hrmmm... It was scheduled for replacement in November anyway? I guess balloons don't last very long.
