Bob Chapeck, Chairman of Disney Parks and Resorts, announced new additions coming to the Magic Kingdom in time for the Walt Disney World 50th Anniversary celebration. One of the surprises of the day was a brand new theater coming to the Main Street U.S.A.
Keeping with Main Street's early 20th century feel, the theater building will be modeled after the Willis Theater in Kansas City circa 1920. Details of what type of show will be at the new attraction are still in development, but fans should expect news on this in the not too distant future. "We aim big when it comes to celebrating milestones," said Chapek.
The dates and the location of the new theater will be "right off of Main Street USA" weren't announced during the panel, and the specific spot for this addition can't quite be sussed out from the concept art. My girls and I sat down with Google Earth for a brainstorming session to take a best guess at where it may be.
To us, the spot for the theater new theater to be built that makes the most amount of sense is in what is currently a cast member parking lot to the east of the current Main Street Buildings. This location is not only a great available space, but goes along a route that Disney already uses as an overflow exit path to help flow foot traffic during the most congested seasons.
Walt Disney World's 50th Anniversary (October 1st, 2021 if you're wondering) is expected to kick off be the busiest year ever for the Florida Theme Parks. The need for space to flow the guests through makes turning this swath of backstage land into a a permanent path with its own attraction makes sense. At this time however Disney has said nothing about a new street being added to the area, so all we can due is keep our mouse ears to the ground.
