I am pleased to report that I am home now after a night in the hospital. My neck surgery was Friday afternoon.
The surgeon said the surgery was very successful - the bulging disc was putting severe pressure on the nerve. He also found a surprise he was not expecting - with all the extra pressure, a bone spur had formed and was part of the problem with all the pain I was experiencing. The irritated nerve is now "flapping in the breeze" as the doctor states - I may have ongoing issues/pain until the nerve calms down though.
The disc was completely removed, with a plastic insert put in its place (filled with all sorts of fun stuff) - everything is held together with a plate and screws. This is good news because I will not have to a wear a bulky hard neck brace.
But I do have a cool scar
