Thoughts on Cruising after the Costa Accident

I've been glued to the TV most of the week watching the coverage the tragedy in Italy with the Costa Concordia. As a Navy Veteran I'm absolutely flabbergasted that the Captain abandoned ship before everyone else was off. Now he's saying that he "tripped and fell into a life boat." Seriously!? Does he really think that anyone is going to believe that? What a dishonorable loser.

Oddly, this horrible accident hasn't seemed to color my opinion about the cruise industry and that it is a fairly safe way to travel. Of course, my only cruise so far has been with Disney, and I guess I feel that they truly look out for the safety of both guest and cast.

I've read on Cruise Critic that many lines sailing through Europe don't have a crew that speaks much English, and that this was an issue when the Costa passengers were trying to evacuate. I think that just cements my love of Disney and the Disney Cruise Line. I know that when sailing with the Mouse that I'll be able to get emergency instructions in my native language. Luckily they do Med Cruises, so if I want to sail in Europe I'll still have an option.

Has this accident effected anyone else? Would it stop you from cruising? Does it make you love the Disney Line even more?

I have never cruised. I hope we can take a Disney cruise someday, and the Cost Concordia incident won't change my mind since I'm sure Disney provides much better safety and service.

I've never been on a cruise before but would like to some day. This incident hasn't changed that.

It hasn't changed my mind, either. I'll even continue to cruise Holland America, a sister cruise line of Costa. I really believe it was a somewhat isolated incident, meaning that cruise ships don't often wreck, and I would imagine that most of the captains have more character than this guy. Every cruise I've taken, the staff takes the muster drill very seriously, and it's completed before we sail.

From what I've been reading on Cruise Critic that is the American Standard. However I guess that this particular Costa cruise picked up or let of people at every port, so it's almost more like a transport line than the common round trip cruises that we have here. Because of that they do the drills on a different type of schedule. Fairly interesting IMO.

Yesterday Carnival said that they put the Captain on suspension and that they would NOT be providing him legal aid. Quite telling.

I'm headed out on Norwegian Western Caribbean the first week in March. It will be my first non-Disney vacation in close to 20 years. My husband and I are going with my in-laws. It should be interesting.

It doesn't change my desire to cruise. I am excited to go on a Disney Cruise my husband just wants our kids to be a little older first. Maybe we need to sneak away for a no kids cruise. Hmmm. From what I have heard on the news this sounds like one bad captain not a problem with the ship or anything like that so I would jump on a cruise without a second thought.

We love to cruise and this hasn't changed my desire to either. I'm trying to plan our next cruise!

I gave it some thought after the accident, and decided that it does not change my opinion. But i will stick to my motto that the only cruise I would do is a Disney one. That was true before, and even more true now. I think I just trust them more for some reason.

Wouldn't change my opinion of cruising, but I wouldn't want that captain!
