Times Square Disney Store

DH and I finally made it to the Times Square Disney Store when we were in NYC for the NY Toy Fair Feb 13-14, 2011. What a SUPER Disappointment. Why oh why did Disney close World of Disney and let the Disney Store take over?

First off, it's only 2 floors unlike the WOD store on 5th ave which was 3 and much much smaller than WOD too. They took out all of the cool Disney Art because of it. Secondly, all the merchandise is just what you see at Disney Store online plus a few NYC specific items. WOD had so many special and park items.

Secondly, they no longer sell or trade Disney Pins. We were so upset. We came lanyards in hand, ready to trade with CM's, stupidly not thinking that the Disney Store doesn't own rights to the Disney Pins. Even the CM's (if that's what Disney Store calls them) were jealous and spent tons of time talking to us and discussing our/their pins. Many of them had been WOD cm's and missed trading with guests and the once a month trade days. Though they did have Vinylmation to buy if you collect that, which didn't make sense either. No trading of it, just selling, so why can't they at least sell the pins?

A huge portion of the store was just disney princess stuff. There were only 5 or 6 shirts in adult sizes. I could go on.

The WOD store was special, sure it wasn't on Times Square, but it was worth the effort to get to it, and 5th Ave is nothing to sneeze at. This store is nothing more than your average Disney Mall store, just a bit bigger. Why did Walt Disney Company make this decision. WOD was always packed, they had to be making money. This store was not that crowded at all just after dinner time on a warm Feb night. The M&M's store just up the street on Times Square was much more crowded.

We are so bummed, granted this just makes more of a reason to save to head to WDW, but still. We can't for the life of us figure this decsion out.

Thanks for the review. I read one a while back and they seemed less negative than you, but still pretty unimpressed. I don't know if they had ever been to World of Disney. I'm amazed they don't sell pins. Does anyone have any idea why?

I've been hearing a lot of unimpressed reviews as well. I really do think they missed the mark on this one. The 5th and 55th store was magical; this one, from what I've heard, is just an overgrown "mall" Disney store.

Thanks for your review, K. Do they still have any Disney candy or Art of Disney stuff there?

They have a very small offering of Disney candy, but not what you'd find in the parks, it's wasn't anything exciting. A few lollipops and such. I was looking forward to some Mickey shortbread cookies, but alas, they aren't sold there.

There is no Art of Disney stuff at all, which was a major disappointment. We used to love drooling over it at WOD.

They told us they couldn't sell pins because pins are Walt Disney Company, and they aren't. This confused me though, because you can buy pins on disneystore.com and they were selling Vinylmation. One person told us that their cooporate office said the pins weren't worth it. Which even she said made no sense. It is just odd.

Do Disney Stores generally do well in other places?

I think NYC was the only World of Disney Store outside of a Disney Park.

My guess on that one is that the theft/loss of pins due to shoplifting maybe wasn't worth stocking the inventory? The point about being The Walt Disney Company doesn't make any sense.

Do they carry any adult clothing/accessories at all?

We only saw a handful of adult shirts and 1 dourney and burke purse, other than that, it was mainly princess outfits, toys and trinkets. They had 5 snowglobes to choose from and a couple of kitchen items, otherwise, it was all kids stuff.

eeek... so sad to read this since I am a Disney Store Cast Member (yes, anyone that works for the company is called a Cast Member)
wow, so many things to address, but please keep in mind that I am not a company spokesman...

about the Pins..
We've tried them before, several years ago, and they just didnt do well. We did the selling, we did the trading. I dont think it had to do with the inventory and loss of the merchandise, and tt has nothing to do with who owns the "rights" or whatever, and we're all part of the same company so I'm not sure why the CM would tell you that. Perhaps they just didnt know an answer to give.

Vinylmation:
we are just starting to carry these.. we do have some that they carry at the park, and we're also carrying some Disney Store exclusives (like Villains!). As of right now, we're not trading.. but they are considering that for the future.

The actual store itself:
This is the newest store design and all newly opened or remodeled stores will have this design (though the 2 floors is just for NYC)... every muckymuck and their mother including Bob Iger had to give their approval for this design and it's gotten rave reviews (at least the mall stores that I know of)
Perhaps you didnt get to see all the newness and technological offerings that the store has? The whole idea is that it's more than just a "place to buy Disney stuff"... it's meant to be a place where you can have a Disney "Experience" outside of a park. I was on the team that helped merchandise the mock store they built in a warehouse and it was incredible. and Yes, I've been to the store on 5th ave.. and while it was nice.. it was nothing better than a World of Disney at WDW or DL. Much like this store sells the same merch you can get at any Disney store, the 5th ave store had park merchandise. The parks are getting out of running stores that arent at the parks (ie. 5th ave, Madison Ave., and even the Studio Store on the Studio Lot in Burbank, CA).

I wish I could tell you info about how well it's doing.. but being a CM I cant give out THAT info. All I can say is.. I wish I was running that store!

Wow, interesting perspective. Katrina, I'm hoping you just saw the store on not-such-a-stellar-day? I know from all the press, it was a big deal. Thanks for answering some of those questions, too, DD. I have seen comments that the store pales in comparison to the former WoD store, though.

I'm not saying that it's not a nice store, I'm just saying it's just a nicer than average mall store. Yes it had techy things, i.e. wave a wand in front of a mirror and a princess talks to you, but it doesn't have the "I'm in a disney park" feeling that world of disney had. I'm glad that the disney stores are making a come back, I miss that our mall store closed a few years ago.

What I am saying is that it doesn't make sense to close World of Disney to make a fancy mall store. I didn't mean to offend DonaldDork, but I'm not making up what the cm's said to us. Also, we went to WOD several times for pins and pin trading events and the store was always wall to wall with people and the stocks were always low, so I know they were selling. The cm's said they are asked repeatedly every day for pins and pin trading in the times square store. I can understand not having it in the malls, but this store could be different.

As to a not so stellar day, like I said, it was Feb 13th on the warmest night of the year so far. Times Square was full of people. Stores were packed, just not the Disney Store.

Right! I just mean that perhaps the store CMs weren't on their best "Customer Service" behavior. It happens - not just in the stores. I'm just sorry that the experience wasn't good for you. I'm sure everyone would agree that not selling pins "because it's not worth it" isn't really the kind of answer a customer should get.

Like I said, I've heard similar comments, that people miss the WoD store. I'm never likely to visit, since I'm close to WDW and WoD, but I hate it for other Disney fans like you, for whom the NY store experience is important.

And finally, a disclaimer (because I like for everyone to be happy all the time Laughing out loud): The crew in my Disney Store is consistently wonderful. Which amazes me. I could never do it!

Sadly I never went to WoD in NYC so I can't really compare--but I will say this is not the first report I've heard where someone was less impressed. I get the feeling the store isn't bad it's just not the same..I can't imagine what it would be like if they replaced WoD in DTD with a Disney Store..it would just feel odd! Even though they are sort of the same.
