Over the years I have experienced the adult side of Disney and I love every second of it; from Saki at the California Grill to Sam Adams Chocolate Boch at last year's Food and Wine Festival. It is always a wonderful to find a great Disney beer at my local grocer. So imagine my surprise when I was confronted with Chimay Grande Reserve or Chimay "Blue Cap". I have to say that I have seen Chimay before at my local grocer but until someone brought to my attention that it is sold within World Showcase, I never really gave it a second thought. This was a horrible mistake that I am glad to have fixed.
This authentic Trappist beer is dark with complex with a flavor that improves with age. It's been brewed within the walls of a Trappist monastery under the tight control and responsibility of the community of monks, and whose "revenue is devoted to social service." Originally it was brewed as a Christmas Beer, but due to it's popularity it's now available all year long.
Chimay Grande Reserve is a beautiful beer with an incredible caramel color that color seems to transfer to the scent as this sweet, burnt sugary smell can be found subtly hidden behind the bolder smell of the yeast. Flavor wise this is a very smooth ale. The caramel notes easily come through with a slight flower and an almost fruity finish. It has a tinge of fresh yeast which is associated with a light rosy flowery touch, is particularly pleasant; and the aroma, perceived as one enjoys it, only accents the delightful sensations revealed by the odour, all revealing a light but agreeable caramelized note. The beauty is that none of these flavors overpower the taste in any way, which helps to accentuate it's smooth taste and feel. The ale went well with a nice spicy Italian ravioli but also seemed to shine when paired with a thick juicy steak. This is definitely an ale that every beer drinker should try.
