Since 1971 golf has played a big part in many Walt Disney World Vacations. The property is home to four championship golf courses with old growth trees, spacious greens, and some challenging water hazards. Recently one of the most loved features of the Magnolia Golf Course, the par 3 No. 6 hole with its Mickey-shaped sand bunker, received a little tender loving care.
The nature of maintaining a golf course, and sculpting the earth into pleasurable gaming experience takes a lot of work. Changes in the soil conditions, and the long-term effects of weather can compromise special features of a course, and compromise design through sinking, and sand erosion. The Magnolia Mickey bunker has gone through several refurbishments over the years, however the latest steps represent an investment that will protect the famous feature for years to come.
Magnolia Mickey was enhanced with Capillary Concrete, a system that promotes adequate drainage while taking advantage of natural capillary action that moves moisture back into the sand during dry periods to create ideal conditions for play. The capillary concrete is a safe and sustainable solution helping to manage excess water use, while improving the quality of the sand, and the lifespan of the bunker.
The iconic feature on the Magnolia course is so loved by guests playing the course that recently Disney and Arnold Palmer Golf Management announced that more are on the way! Mickey-shaped bunkers are in the works for each of the other three Walt Disney World Resort golf courses sometime next summer.
