Disney fans can be pretty dedicated to their coffee, and whether they prefer Starbucks or Joffery's you don't want to get between them and their caffeine fix. Yesterday, Disney announced a brand new brew that not only provides support to fans looking for a great cuppa joe, but supports their mission of conservation around the world.
In 2009, Disney established the Disney Climate Solutions Fund (DCSF) and ever since they have been leading the way to conserve rainforests in an effort to combat climate change. The DCSF supports forest conservation, management and regeneration with projects in United States, China, Mexico and Peru. One of these projects, in conjunction with Conservation International, supports efforts to reduce deforestation in the Alto Mayo Protected Forest. This forest, twice the size of New York City, spans 450,000 acres in Peru, and for years it's been loosing mass acreage to unsustainable agriculture practices.
Disney reached out to its specialty roaster, Joffrey's Coffee and Tea Company, and together with these partners sent representatives went to Peru. The group got a first hand look at the methods being used to harvest and process the coffee crop.. They worked directly with the Alto Mayo Coffee Growers Co-op to teach them about sustainable techniques such as growing coffee in the shade, making organic compost, pruning coffee trees and learning methods to avoid coffee-leaf rust diseases. Joffery's Roastmaster, lead the development of a special certified organic and fair trade brew that's sales will help to support the 240,000 people in the Alto Mayo Valley.
Peru Alto Mayo - an organic, fair trade, sustainable coffee - is a medium roast with notes of dark chocolate, with an aroma of fresh vanilla and almond. Walt Disney World guests can now indulge in this sustainable brew at select restaurants including:
It's nice to know that with every sip of this coffee you're not only getting great flavor, but supporting a great project that gives back to the planet we all live on. Will you be ordering Peru Alto Mayo on your next Disney vacation? Leave a comment and let us know how you liked it!
