If you're looking to celebrate Mardi Gras at Walt Disney World, you don't need to schedule your trip at a special time of year. At Disney's Port Orleans French Quarter Resort every day is Mardi Gras! To get a taste of the city that care forgot, head on over to the Sassagoula Floatworks quick service restaurant for some delightfully southern specialties.
The Sassagoula Flaotworks is a quick service restaurant themed to be a warehouse where Madi Gras Parade floats are stored. Props and parade artwork dot the room to bring some color into the space, but in general it just looks like a big warehouse. For a location that was recently remodeled, it lacks that special flare people come to Disney for.
While the menu here offers the standard quick serve fare of pizza, burgers, and salads that can be found at many of the Disney Resort Counter Service restaurants, it also goes a step further to highlight traditional New Orleans flavors with several specialties of the house. The chefs at Sassagoula Floatworks have stepped up with cajun flavors that don't shy away from the spices, and get to the heart of one of America's favorite cities. If you're looking to step outside your culinary box, while still being kind to your budget, I highly recommend a stop at this out of the way gem.

Worth the trip on their own - the beignets at Sassagoula Floatworks are made fresh to light and fluffy perfection, topped with powdered sugar, and can be "kicked up a notch" with three different dipping sauces: Caramel, Raspberry, or Chicory Coffee Ganache. Honestly, I've been lucky enough to indulge in real French Quarter beignets at the famous Cafe du Monde, and the ones being served up here are every bit as delicious.
If you want to indulge even further in sinful southern sweets, Sassagoula Floatworks is also home to a Beignet Gelato Sundae, House-made Pecan-Pralines, and Mardi Gras King Cake.

We were there at the end of January after the refurb. We ate breakfast everyday and a couple of evening meals at the Floatworks. The food was all pretty good, I particularly enjoyed the steak breakfast & beignets. Port Orleans French Quarter is our favorite resort, even tough we've stayed at 3 deluxe and a couple of other moderate resorts. The theming and location are great, we thoroughly enjoyed our last stay. Perhaps some of the fondness is a little nostalgia (we stayed there when we got married 24 yrs ago).
