Kona Cafe' has long been one of my favorite spots for breakfast at Walt Disney World. This casual table service restaurant just off the monorail at Disney's Polynesian Village Resort Great Ceremonial House is home to the "legendary" Tonga Toast. While that dish alone brings in tons of dinners, I'm a fan of exploring the menu here.
Located on the second floor of the Great Ceremonial House, this area is always bustling with guests coming and going. The space is cordoned off from the foot traffic, yet retains an open and airy feeling with views across the atrium. Light streams through the glass roof, and plays along the earthy reds and yellows in the restaurant's decor. Carved wooden tikis decorate the walls protecting guests from harm and blessing their trips.
I didn't have a reservation on this particular morning, but I was able to slip in as a single at about 9:30 AM. There were plenty of open tables on this weekday, as most of t he hotel guests had shuffled away to the Parks for the day.
I always start off with coffee here, because I'm a sucker for a Kona brew. Two types of Kona coffee are offered here depending on your level of coffee snobbery. Freshly Brewed Joffrey's Coffee Hawaiian Kona Blend, or Joffrey's Coffee Hawaiian Kona Maragogype Press Pot. Most of the time I go for a press pot, yet on this visit I ordered the brewed, and I'll be honest, both are more than decent cups to start your morning off with. The Hawaiian Kona Blend was rich and dark, just the way I like it.
The breakfast menu at the Kona Cafe' have offerings of familiar comfort foods with just a touch of island love. I kept things straight forward ordering the Polynesian Egg Platter. The platter includes two eggs-any style with fresh fruit poke, a macadamia Mickey muffin, and home-fried potatoes with spiced ham. Bacon or sausage are also an option, but I went with ham to continue my island theme.
This entree was pretty straight forward and just as it sounds. The eggs and potatoes were a bit overdone, but the thick cut of subtly spiced ham was very good. The fruit poke was green apple, mango, blue berry, with just the lightest touch of sugar was delicious. And that macadamia Mickey Muffin, well I wrote a whole post about those here.
That all being said, my reason for breakfast at Kona Cafe' on this trip was without a doubt the Mimosa Flight. The flight includes your choice of three tropical juices - orange, pineapple, cranberry, pink grapefruit, or liliko'i. These weren't particularly small servings of mimosa either. I received three very full glasses of juice and sparkling wine.
I chose the liliko'i, pink grapefruit, orange juices for my flight. I was pretty excited about the pink grapefruit mimosa, that was a mistake. This is one juice that just doesn't mimosa well. Without a doubt my favorite was the liliko'i juice. Liliko'i Juice is a blend of orange, passion fruit, and guava juices blended together and it makes for a fabulous morning cocktails.
Overall it was another fantastic breakfast at Kona Cafe'. The service was prompt and friendly, the food hearty and comforting, and the morning cocktails just what I was looking for. If you're looking for a comfortable, casual restaurant to have a hearty meal on your way to the Magic Kingdom, be sure to keep the Polynesian's Kona Cafe' in mind.
