The New Harambe Market At Disney's Animal Kingdom

I'm always excited to hear about new dining coming anywhere in Walt Disney World, but fun new food to try in the Theme Parks always make me exceptionally giddy. A brand new themed food court has opened in one of my favorite sections of Disney's Animal Kingdom. To me, the Harambe Village often feels like the living breathing heart of Disney's Animal Kingdom. It oozes community, with music and drumming, the theater and restaurants, artisans carving their wares in booths. Now added to this bustling area of the Park is the Harambe Market.

Harambe Market is designed to resemble the marketplace of the village. It offers that familiar feeling that everyone who spends time at their local farmers market knows, yet it's more exotic. The Disney Imagineers have done a wonderful job of theming this place where African merchants have set up their booths to sell good to tourists making a stop before leaving on safari. From the handpainted signs and printed broadsides, advertisements for all that happens in Harambe can be found. Display "booths" are stacked with hand crafted baskets and African Art, it's all part of the theme.

The centerpiece in Harambe Market is actually the food vendors, who serve up their African inspired specialties from window counters where guests can order up a muted taste of the dark continent. The windows all offer a centerpiece item, dessert and beverage. The trick being that you can order food from all of the windows at any of them. Shops are titled Chef Mwanga's Ribs Shop, Kitamu Grill, Famous Sausages, Wanjohi Refreshment.

One of the stars of the the menus is the Boerewors Sausage Fried in Curried Corn Batter. Think of a corn dog on steroids, with a flavorful sausage link inside that's dipped in yellow curry batter and deep fried to a golden delight. It, and many of the other entrees are served up with a Roasted Broccoli and Tomato Salad that's been tossed in just a hint of vinaigrette.

The seating in the Market is outdoors, however Disney has made efforts to create shades with tin roofed pavilions and colorful umbrellas. The pavilions have fans that create a soft breeze in the Florida sun.

Off to the side in the Market you'll notice one vendor who has done very well, Zuri's Sweet Shop, a cool little culinary shop that sells all sorts of Disney's Animal Kingdom Treasures. Here you'll find bulk candy, and Lion King themed pre-packaged sweets, bottles of lush African Wines, bottles of the Flame Tree BBQ Sauce, and African spice rubs. There's just about everything you need to take home the flavors of Africa and cook them up at home.

Zuri's is also home to a confectionery case that sells hand crafted candies and sweets, such as Carmel Apples, Fudge, Cake Pops, Mickey Krispie Treats, and a Dark Chocolate Mickey with Chili Peppers. What you won't find any longer is the controversial "Poop Candy" which according to Disney quickly sold out and is not in the plan to be re-stocked.

We were lucky enough that our trip was in the past two weeks and we were able to experience the "poop candy". Yes, it looked gross... Yes, it looked just like poop... and Yes it was hilarious and tasty. Our teenage son had been looking forward to having some for weeks before we left. We are disappointed that it has been removed from the line up of the creative snacks at the Animal Kingdom.
