Last week while at Disney's Hollywood Studios I stepped in to the Walt Disney Presents Gallery for a special preview of The Nutcracker And The Four Realms. This limited time preview showed just enough of the movie to make me want more.
Sure to be an "girl power" inspiration, Clara (Mackenzie Foy) is depicted as a spunky budding engineer with a curious mind and strong heart. Clara only wants one thing for Christmas, to find the one-of-a-kind-key sure to unlock the mysterious silver egg that's sure to hold a priceless gift. When she is presented with a golden thread at her godfather Drosselmeyer's (Morgan Freeman) holiday party, she follows it, soon finding herself a strange and mysterious world.
In this strange land Clara encounters a soldier named Phillip (Jayden Fowora-Knight), a frightening creature of mice, and the regents who preside over three Realms: Land of Snowflakes, Land of Flowers and Land of Sweets. The beautiful Sugarplum Fairy (Keira Knightley) inspires Clara and Phillip to brave the ominous Fourth Realm, home to the tyrant Mother Ginger (Helen Mirren), to retrieve Clara's key and hopefully return harmony to the unstable world. In the pre-show space, guests are treated to a look at some of the stunning costumes the actors wore during filming.
No one spins an enchanted tale the way Disney does, and this traditional holiday story is now reaching out to audiences far beyond the ballet. Based on E.T.A. Hoffmann's classic tale of "The Nutcracker" written in 1816, "The Nutcracker and the Four Realms"showcases the wondrous journey of Clara, who finds herself in the mystical world that is home to a host of eccentric characters and no shortage of surprises.
Disney hopes that its new version of this time honored family tradition will have the staying power to inspire generations to come. Check out the featurette below called "Family Tradition," it includes interviews with The Nutcracker And The Four Realms stars Keira Knightley, Helen Mirren, Misty Copeland and Mackenzie Foy.
