The Top Five Biggest Reveals from This Year’s D23 Expo

There were so many news items coming out of the D23 Expo that there's no way we can recap everything, so we'll do a top five list of the biggest reveals from the event.

1. On Playing a Villain: First up is Angelina Jolie. She's playing Malificent in the upcoming film of the same name and she surprised fans when she took the stage during the live-action presentation. She told the audience that she scared small children when she was in costume for the role. Jolie also said that the evil Malificent was a character she was drawn to as a child.

2. No News is Good News? If you were hoping for news about Star Wars during the Expo you - and the rest of the Star Wars fandom - were very disappointed. There was no news about Star Wars - not from Walt Disney Studios chairman Alan Horn, not even during a session called "Crash Course in the Force: Star Wars Saga 101." Just some packing crates marked "Orange Harvest" for us to ponder.

3. So About Tomorrowland....: We keep hearing about Disney's Tomorrowland starring George Clooney, but we don't know much about it. And apparently Disney is going to keep it that way. At the Expo the film's director/co-writer Brad Bird and co-writer Damon Lindelof said their inspiration for the film was a box full of mystery. The duo showed fans some of the items in the box which they said were from the Disney archives, but it was all very cryptic and mysterious. Just like everything else about the movie. Disney did release an app to share some of what is in the box with everyone. Guess we'll have to wait until 2014 to really unravel the mystery.

4. Animation News: Disney revealed plans for a film called Zootopia for 2016. The film is from director Byron Howard and writer Jared Bush and features different cities for different species, such as Sahara Square, a Rain Forest district, and Little Rodentia where the mice live. The animals in the film use Rabbit Transit for public transportation and the main characters are a fox and a rabbit. In short, we know more about Zootopia than we do about Tomorrowland.

5. And even more animation news: The animation session at the Expo was full of A-list stars as the voice casts for several animated films were revealed. Inside Out from Up's Pete Docter arrives in 2015 and features a cast with Lewis Black, Mindy Kaling, Bill Hader, Amy Poehler, and Phyllis Smith. John Lasseter previewed The Good Dinosaur which will feature the voices of Frances McDormand, John Lithgow, Bill Hader, Neil Patrick Harris, Judy Greer, and Lucas Neff.

And if you were waiting for Finding Dory news, we have that too. It was announced that Diane Keaton, Eugene Levy, and Ty Burrell are joining Ellen DeGeneres on the sequel to Finding Nemo.

I was a little disappointed that there wasn't more actual news that came out of D23 this year. However I heard that overall it went much more smoothly than in the previous years.

To be honest, I expected a lot more on Star Wars that would have been released...heck..even a visit from George Lucas himself would have been nice (would have been a nice treat since nothing was shown or mentioned either for Comic Con). The big thing that they didn't reveal too much on that I thought for sure would be disclosed was with what is really going on with "Avatarland" or at least something on what they are planning to do...They had a booth in the Imagineering area but even then, it just looks like film renderings to me.

I was, however, impressed with how well everything went. My husband and I were quite nervous (being it was our first time going) and hearing all the horror stories about the lines and digital devices being taken away. They actually gave you a plastic nylon bag that would be sealed and you got to take it with you instead of worrying about the ordeal of picking it up afterward. The lines outside the arena were great because it didn't snake around and it was clear (except for the first morning we got there) on how it was going to work.

They were giving out a lot of stuff and we got really lucky to have won one of the raffles. Overall it was better than what we were expecting.
