Face masks are a barricade to particles released into the environment, and during the current health environment they are a requirement for both guests and cast members returning to the Walt Disney World Resort. While wearing a mask in the Florida sun may sound like a difficult prospect it is not an impossible one. This important piece of safety equipment is key to slowing the spread of COVID-19. After repeatedly being asked questions about how mask wearing will effect a Disney vacation, I've gathered some Top Mask Wearing Tips For A Disney Summer to help you stay cool.

Do you have tips for staying cool in a mask this Summer?

Yes! Yes I do!

  • Choose masks that are light in color to help reflect heat. Darker masks keep heat in.
  • Make sure mask fits correctly and isn't too tight over your mouth.
  • Cotton masks will absorb sweat, but switch to a new mask once the first gets wet or dirty.
  • Limit your time outside in the heat wearing a mask.

You may wonder how you're supposed to limit your time wearing one when they are required just about everywhere on Disney Property. Walt Disney World is working on setting up "relaxation areas" where masks won't need to be worn, but information on exactly what that means is still forth coming. However it is also worth noting that guests dining at restaurant tables will not need to wear masks, so sitting down for a drink is a fine way to cool off, hydrate, and take a mask break. In addition the CDC does not advise the wearing of masks while in swimming pools for alternative safety reasons, this means that an afternoon dip has the added bonus of being a mask-free activity.

Can I protect my skin when wearing a mask?

I get you, wearing a masks all day every day has done a number on your skin. Mine too. When everyday moisture, debris, and bacteria get trapped under a face mask the wearer can experience chaffing and breakouts. I found a couple of top tips to help reduce the "rash" and keep your skin health and glowing beneath the bandanas.

  • Wash your face with a gentle cleanser morning and night, then apply moisturizer.
  • Go easy on the make-up beneath your mask, if you wear it at all.
  • Don't forget to use sunscreen, but choose one that is a mineral-based.
  • When you take your mask off at night give your hands a good scrub too.
  • Wash your masks in your room at night with a gentle detergent and hang to dry.
  • If you are chaffing from your mask, use a thin coat of ointment on your face overnight to help your skin repair while your sleep.

How many masks do I need to pack?

I'm suggesting that you pack four masks per person for your Disney trip. This is what my family will be doing. That may sound like a lot, but it's really not because cloth masks need to be washed. Each day every person in your party needs to be wearing one mask and carrying a spare mask (to switch into if/when your mask gets wet). When you get back to your hotel room each night you need to wash those masks. If you wash in your hotel room sink and hang to dry your masks may not be ready to wear again in the morning. That means you need a second set of masks ready to go every other day.
