The Epcot International Flower and Garden Festival is well under way at Walt Disney World - but did you realize that the property of a horticultural wonderland all year long? We've gathered together some of our favorite reasons that this vacation kingdom is the best place to bring your green thumbed family any season.
Walt Disney World offers more than 4,000 acres of the landscaped grounds to add beauty and warmth to every corner of the property a guest may encounter. Since 1971, new plantings have included some 175,000 trees and more than 3.5 million tended shrubs.
Every year Disney gardeners plant more than 3 million bedding plants in about 300,000 square feet of flower beds. They rotate the plantings routinely with daily flower beds inspections, and replacement planting.
3,000 species of plants representing flora gathered from all over the United States and 50 foreign countries can be found.
The nursery team produces more than 4,000 hanging baskets each year.
Landscaping sets the scene in every theme park. Be it the lush green escape into Disney's Animal Kingdom Oasis, the authentic savanna of the park's Kilimanjaro Safaris attraction. Exotic jungles of Adventureland in Magic Kingdom fade into the arid, cactus-dotted Frontierland. Each location has a range of plants that are used to transport guests to different times, places, and locations in the world.
13,000 Rose are represented on property by more than 100 varieties.
Topiaries have been popular since the beginning and can be found in more than 200 designs, ranging from trees pruned in geometric shapes to the many topiary figures in the shape of Disney characters.
The Land pavilion at Epcot is a showplace of cutting edge farming, with Mickey Mouse-shaped food and fruit the size of bowling balls.
There are nearly 2,000 acres are devoted to six different varieties of turf, all of it gets mowed at least twice a week.
There are 600 specialists who maintain the landscape throughout Walt Disney World Resort, more than 30 operate the Walt Disney World Nursery.
Right now guests are being treated to the annual celebration of gardening, but just because the festival ends, doesn't for any reason mean that the show stops for the hard working cast members of Disney's Horticulture team.
