Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge is a unique resort that allows guests the experience of getting close to the African savanna without ever leaving central Florida. A centerpiece of this experience is the Arusha Savanna and Arusha Rock Overlook, where guests can venture out closer and view the resort's impressive collection of African wildlife and learn about life on the savanna.
A Disney Tale Of The Savanna -
Many summers ago, a heard of wildebeest traveled from waterhole to waterhole, only to find them all dry. One day, while resting from their endless searching, the herd was startled by a loud rumble. Looking up, they saw dark clouds on the horizon. Unsure of the sound, the animals prepared to flee. But one young wildebeest paused, sniffed the air, and caught the faint scent of rain. Boldly he moved toward the clouds. The others cautiously followed, and soon they found pools of fresh rainwater. To this day, the wildebeest migrate toward the sound of thunder, and the promise of life-giving rain.
In the wild larger mammals follow a migratory path, moving from water source to water source using a collective "memory." Signs dotted about the Arusha Rock overlook offer information about how African savanna dwellers find water to survive. Disney uses unique water features to share a story of survival in a harsh landscape.
Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge provides guests with the illusion of a sparse African Savanna where giraffes find their water by munching on leafy green browse, and watering holes are sparse pits where birds perch and peck at the mud and muck. It's worth noting though that here the large mammals from Animal Kingdom Lodge's 200 strong mixed herd are conditioned to remember when it's time to head back to the animal care center lying at the back of a nearly 45-acre area planted savanna enclosure.
Next time you're taking a break at this Deluxe Disney Resort be sure to take some time and head out to the Arusha Savanna. Not only will you find an exciting assortment of animals to view from the overlook, but cultural guides to answer your questions, a fire pit where African Storytellers enchant, Hidden Mickeys, and periodic cultural activities.
