Adventurer's Club - Case of Crying Wolf?

As we near the untimely demise of the Adventurer's Club, I was wondering today whether it might in some ways be a victim of crying wolf.

We all know that "Disney People" (we know who we are) raise a holy terror every time Disney changes something. I suspect that if they wanted to change the name of the Tomorrowland Noodle Station someone would start a petition to stop it. Which leads me to wonder if Disney has somewhat 'tuned out' the serious fans because:

a.) They'll come back no matter what Disney does.
b.) They complain any time Disney changes ANYTHING.

In the case of the Adventurer's Club, it seems that the outrage is much more genuine and widespread than in other cases. One wonders if we've screamed so much Disney has started to tune us out and can't tell when they're making a mistake.

Well, they've got me there. :squi:

Plus, I'm as big a fan of the Adventurer's Club as the next guy, but I've gotta give Disney the benefit of the doubt. 90% of the time they're right--which is why we keep going back (that 90% not including gaffes such as Alien Encounter and The Making of Me...). I'll see what they have to offer regarding the "new PI" before I completely write off the project.

Agreed. I was never a bit fan of the rest of PI, so it'll be nice to see that area put to good ( crossfingers ) use.

I will definitely miss the AC, though... sad

I have a couple of thoughts about the Adventurer's Club.

Typically Disney "protests" are like the Cagney and Lacey letter writing campaign. (Yes I'm old). Everyone doesn't want whatever they're protesting to change, but they're not actually going to it in the first place. So everyone says "Don't change It's A Small World", but they're not riding it anymore anyway. This probably contributes to what you're referring to as far as Disney 'tuning people out'.

Additionally while Pleasure Island is not an ill-conceived area, the execution was terrible. I think its perfectly reasonable to try to have areas for 'grownups' (for obvious reasons), however I think its downright LAZY to decide that means 'drinking and dancing'. Yes I admit that's what many "adults" like to do, but if that's what they want to do they'll probably go to Vegas.

That doesn't mean however that there's no market for more 'grownup' entertainment in Downtown Disney and I think they hit the nail on the head with the Adventurer's Club. Something that is more oriented towards a more mature audience, but has something novel and 'Disney' about it. Sadly it got lumped in with what was otherwise a poorly implemented exercise and is getting axed with the rest of it.

As far as the result being the area being put to better use, I think all the outraged blog posts about it are fairly compelling when they point out the two 'marquee' items that Disney is replacing PI with are: A tethered balloon ride and a customized tee-shirt shop? That's certainly not compelling content to get me to go to Downtown Disney. So I'm not entirely confident that they're improving anything, except maybe getting their costs down.

Yeah whatever may have been wrong with their original plan for pleasure island, I'm not sure the new version is an improvement. Is my view that the Adventurer's Club was actually quite popular mistaken? If not, why not try to reproduce that experience instead of putting up a t-shirt shack?

What else is "scheduled to appear" in the new PI?
