Ant-Man

I was meant to put these up last week but it's been a little bit busy, but last week I was very lucky to get to the European premiere of Ant-Man.

I'm not going to spoil the movie - I have no idea when it's meant to be opening Stateside (I only know it's opening this Friday in the UK) - but it's a blast of a movie.

It has a level of humour not seen since the earlier Marvel movies and knows it's a bit of a preposterous idea...the thought of a man shrinking to ant size, but it carries it off well.

The cast is well matched. Inevitably, some cast members are given a bit of a short straw, especially in the case of Evangeline Lilly who seems ill at ease here but gets a great pay off in the first of the end credit sequences. Paul Rudd is an inspired choice for Scott Lang and Michael Douglas gets his punches in and does a great job as the Ben Kenobi-like Hank Pym. Michael Pena steals the scenes with his motormouth sidekick with basically a one-track joke that never seems to get tired.

Highlights of the movie - the 3D works brilliantly here, look out for an Avenger (actually, make that two) making the obligatory cameo, Thomas the Tank Engine and TWO end credit sequences (sorry guys, you'll have to sit through ALL of the titles to get to the second sequence)

A great romp of a movie and quite possibly the best of the Marvel movies so far...Cap 2 notwithstanding. It's a movie that will stand up to a repeat watch, if only to spot everything that points elsewhere...It's been the first movie in a long time (since Rocky IV!) where the auditorium has clapped and cheered at all the right points which must mean it's done something very right!

Thanks, Sid! I'm looking forward to this one.

Without spoiling anything, can you tell me whether they explain why Hank Pym isn't Ant-Man in the movie?

Okay! I loved it! When I first learned Marvel was making an Ant-Man movie, I really didn't think they could pull it off well. They did! Brilliantly! If you know the comic books going way, way back, you'll appreciate the way they included elements from Hank Pym's long history. And if you don't, it's just a cool movie.

I saw it yesterday, and I loved it! I was really unsure about it going into it due to my disappointment with Age of Ultron. I really hoped that the Marvel movies were not taking a turn for the worse; however, I was not disappointed at all. It was funny, action-packed and kept the whole family entertained.

I'm glad you enjoyed it and I hope I was spoiler-free enough!

Absolutely, Sid. You told me just enough to get me excited about the possible plot points.

I saw it a couple weeks ago. I admit I had some reservations about the film from early reviews but I quite enjoyed it. I was very impressed with the imagery and surroundings whenever Scott shrunk down to size. And the action sequences particularly the finale between Ant-Man and Yellowjacket were done brilliantly.

Casting was brilliant. It was an interesting choice for Paul Rudd to play Scott Lang but he did a great job. He had his funny moments but also the heartwarming moments with his daughter. The chemistry between Hank and Scott I thought was the heart of the movie.

The one repeating criticism is the lack of development of Darren Cross/Yellowjacket and that seems to be a recurring theme with Marvel movies regarding its villains. He's definitely not an interesting villain compared to Loki or the Winter Soldier.

Overall, better than I expected. 4/5 for me.

I had reservations about seeing this movie, but I really enjoyed it too. Good casting, loved Michael Pena. And Thomas the Train made me laugh out loud. Fun movie.
