Calorie Counts on Menus

Michael's thread got me thinking about dieting and cutting different things -- like trans fats -- from my diet. I was in NY not too long ago and noticed that, by law, all of the calories have to be listed on the menus now (I think!). It was very disconcerting to see calorie counts next to things in the menu, and I'm pretty sure it changed what my order would have been if they hadn't been there!

Has anyone experienced this? Do you think it's a positive or negative development in restaurants?

I haven't seen that!!

And oh my goodness..Disney World is that LAST place I want them to print calories on the menu! They need to do that at home..when I am seriously debating eating cookies...not there..not in my happy place where calories don't count!

Is it the law in NY though?? I guess it has an effect..it would change what I ordered.

Lot's of places in northern NJ have been doing that too. I'm not a fan! During the week I eat very well and hit the gym so when I go out for dinner on Saturday night, I want to eat what I want and enjoy it! Now I find myself ordering something I don't want because I feel guilty about ordering what I do want because of the bajillion calories!...And forget dessert after! lol It's killing the experience of eating out. But this has been popping up more and more in northern jersey now, too. yuck

They should ask at the front "Do you want the menu with or without the calorie counts?"

I think they should just be able to say "You don't want to know." laugh

Funny enough, studies have shown this to have the opposite of the intended effect. People may order marginally healthier items, but now they order more of them.

Interesting! It's like the diet effect, where you work out, but then feel entitled to eat more because you know you "expended some calories."

They started doing this in New York before I moved two years ago. It was disconcerting, and I agree with you, Jess -- it kind of ruined my experiences dining out. I want to enjoy those evenings that I'm not "on the diet."

I guess i am one of the rare people who likes it - it makes it easier to choose when i am between two things, and more than anything, it makes me think more about what I am eating.

I like it when I'm trying to be aware, but I do agree that it can be a downer when you're trying to go "off plan." I am curious about the empirical results though.

No kidding!? I'm pretty sure that makes me even more pessimistic about the fate of the human race laugh
