Even if you aren't a DVC member, is anyplace going to be as cost efficient as the larger villas if you have a large party? Anyone ever done the math?

Great question. It really depends on how large your party is, how many kids there are, how many adults can actually sleep in the same villa/room, etc.
I know a lot of folks get adjoining rooms at a value resort, which--at around $300 a night for three rooms, sleeping six adults and six kids--is a great deal.
But you'd have to do the food math, too. In a villa, you can make meals instead of going to a food court/restaurant. Over the course of a week or so, that can add up significantly.
Yeah I think it has a lot to do with your need for "alone time." If you have a family that needs a little time apart, jamming everyone into the same space may wind up back-firing. If you all get along great it might be perfect.

I hadn't made specific plans, but I figure if you want to make a big group gathering reasonably priced, a good approach might be getting a big place at Saratoga Springs or some such. Maybe a treehouse?!?!
I've read several cases of people who have stayed in DVC villas sans points and still had fairly cheap vacations. I think it depends largely on how big your party is and how big of a deal having food and stuff in your room is. For me, I'm not going to be cooking anyway, so the Microwave doesn't mean much.
