Character Dining Doesn't Do It For Me..

It's funny, but doing a character meal just doesn't appeal to any of us..Next year will be our 7th onsite magical adventure at Disney and we have never had the incline to book a meal, breakfast, lunch, or dinner, with any of the characters..Even on our first trip when our son was six, he got his photo taken with every character we spotted in the parks, now he advoids them like the plague, ( says he's way too old for that stuff ) yet my wife and I still get our photos taken with Mickey,Minnie, and friends, but the dinning side of things just doesn't appeal to us...I've read so many disappointed reviews of the food and I think that puts us off..How would you persuade me to do at least one next year, and which one would you recommend, and for what?( breakfast/lunch/dinner )

You have to do one! Get an ADR for CP breakfast one hour prior to park opening there's something about walking down an almost empty MSUSA! The food is quite good, bacon and Mickey waffles.(not my cup of tea) Yes it's Pooh and friends but if you don't want to be bothered they won't. Go for the food and early entry to the park. Not to mention the jump on rope drop!

We've done a few character meals, but we went for the food, not the characters. Of course, since we were paying for the characters we did the whole meet and greet thing, but we would've been just as happy with no characters, and perhaps happier since the price of the meal would've been lower.

we seem to be opposites laugh we always do character dining and have never eaten at a signature restaurant. They don't appeal to us.
Our favourite is the Garden Grill at Epcot awesome

I don't do character dining either. The price doesn't seem worth it to me and from what I've seen, the character interaction time is about the same compared to a normal meet and greet. But I've heard that Cape May Cafe and Tusker House are among the better options for character dining at least from a food quality standpoint. Cape May Cafe often flies under the radar and is overlooked by Chef Mickey's and 1900 Park Fare for breakfast.

Other than that, while not technically character dining, Whispering Canyon Cafe and 50s Prime Time Cafe have "characters" of their own.

There are two that I recommend for grown-ups and it's all about the food. Both of these options are 1 TS Credit on the dining plan and give a lot of bang for the buck. The fact that there are characters just happens to be a nice little bonus.

1) Cape May Cafe at the Beach Club Resort for Breakfast. The food is a little more sophisticated than the typical american buffet food. The flavors are richer, with herbs and better cheeses, the pastries are more diverse. The menu seems to be pretty typical buffet, but the recipes are more just a touch involved. I've never felt rushed there or overrun by kids. Characters are Minnie, Pluto, Donald, Goofy. Plus you can order a cocktail.

2) Akershus in Norway/Epcot. I haven't done dinner there but breakfast is pretty awesome. There's a whole Norwegian cold board to enjoy while waiting for your hot foods to be served. The hot foods are all you care to eat delivered to the table, pretty standard (eggs, sausage, bacon) stuff except for the potatoes which are sort of a cheesy creamy casserole that's absolutely delicious. Characters are Princesses, we enjoy making our reservations there for just after the park opens and it's never been overly crowded for us. The best Mimosa I've ever had (and I've had a lot of them) was served to me there.

Over the years, I think we have done just about all of the character breakfasts when we have taken the nieces and nephews to Disney. It's fun with the younger set, but without any kids along, it seems a little creepy to me.

We have done only one and I was TOTALLY against it. I didn't want to pay the money. Then Dad offered to pay and mom booked the 3 of us (mom, Blondie and me) at CRT for lunch. First of all, WOW. I loved it and so glad they "made" me do it.

From meeting Cinderella when you come in, climbing the stairs of the tower, being announced as you walk into the restaurant, the princesses visiting. I don't know why but I yelled "here comes Belle!!!" when I saw her. I was so excited. The food was excellent and there was food my kiddo would eat. I still think for what she had, it was over priced but I know it's more the experience instead of the food....

I think I would do it again with Blondie if she wanted a character meal. I do want to try Ohana at some point...

I would also say to try CRT . The food was great,we had the empty main street as we did breakfast and you get to EAT IN THE CASTLE ...
The only other character meal that rocked was the starwars one but i do believe Mr The Watchmaker won't be there at the right time of the year for that.

DH and I are two adults, no kids and we are going to do our first character meals this fall. We have always felt weird about doing character meals because we don't have kids, but we just decided who cares it's Disney!

The dining we choose to do at WDW is all about the Disney experience. Eating in a castle, an indoor "drive-in" or with Mickey, Goofy, Donald or Pooh and friends is something we can't get when we're home.

I love character dining. I've done several of them solo.

I do remember seeing several all adult tables in CRT when we were there!

I agree with Kristen on Cape May Cafe and Akershus. I loved breakfast at Cape May; they have an amazing variety of dishes. We did Akershus for dinner, and I would've been happy with just the cold buffet, everything I tried was delicious. And then the Norwegian meatballs! Magnificent! We'll go back someday just for the food.

My favorites for character dining locations are Garden Grill at EPCOT and Akershus.

Garden Grill uses some of the vegetables grown in the greenhouse at Living with the Land. The food isn't particularly fancy, but it's delicious. The entrees are beef, turkey, and fish and are served family style. I can't even remember what the side are, but I absolutely remember them being tasty. And the dessert...well, that's why I can't remember the sides. It' a warm berry cobbler sort of thing. Everything is unlimited. We've been there 3 times and the character interaction has been FANTASTIC all three times.

We did Akershus for lunch and I felt a little bit guilty for taking some little girl's lunch reservation because I couldn't have cared less about meeting the princesses. I was there for the Taste of Norway appetizer buffet. I had the Kjottkake (meatballs and mashed potatoes) and it was so savory and delicious. The desserts were some of the best that I've had anywhere in Disney. I wish that they would move the princesses to a restaurant that needed a boost and let the Norwegian food speak for itself at Akershus. Unfortunately, since this meal has 5 of 6 princesses, it's quite expensive. I want to say that it was $90 or better for lunch for the two of us. That's the only reason why we haven't been back yet.

We've to quite a few Character dining and had a great time. Just me and DW, as always. There are some that had better food that others, some that the character interaction was better than others, BUT we always do them when we're there, it's all part of the Disney vacation experience for us.

Cape May for breakfast was really good, and seeing the characters in different costumes was great.

I know that there's a lot of mixed feeling about Chef Mickeys, but I like it. The food is fine for me, a we've had a lot of good times there for birthdays, anniversaries etc.

We've been to Tusker House for breakfast and lunch and to be honest, it is one that we won't visit again in the near future as the food isn't what it was a few years ago, certainly less that DW would eat and enjoy.

I'd like to do one, but I don't think I'd be able to talk my sister into it. We're both single adults without kids, and I think she'd rather spend the time in the park on the rides, I don't know. When I brought it up, she seemed like she wasn't sure if I was kidding or not.

I was amazingly lucky with my CRT reservation, I got a window seat and was there long enough to watch wishes from the inside biggrin I did a few character meals and enjoyed them, I liked seeing the characters in different outfits and also it saved queuing to meet them outside in the parks, the food was good in them as well.
