Chatting in line

I was thinking about this today and wondering if anyone else does it. I often find myself chatting with the people in line next to me when I'm waiting for rides. Is this normal...or just annoying sarcastic ?

We will usually talk to people in line while waiting. My husband is a little more outgoing than me and is usually the one to start a conversation.

I usually try to keep to myself, but I can remember one chat with a 12-yr-old kid which lasted all the way through the Space Mountain line. He was a nice kid and it made the time go quicker. awesome

Oh yeah. I like talking to people in line, too. When you travel alone, as I do, you grab pretty much any opportunity you can to chat with someone, even if it's just for a few seconds. And it seems weird to be standing in close proximity to people for 10 minutes or more and not say anything to them.

We've met some really great folks while waiting endlessly for Disney things (food, rides, parades, fireworks, you name it).

I suppose that chatting can be annoying when you're angry, tired, or frustrated, but usually people are in a pretty good mood at Disney that we've found.

You can usually tell within a few seconds of standing near someone if they're interested in conversation. So I take it case by case.

Here's MY pet peeve. I'm from Kentucky and a big UK fan, so everytime I'm on vacation and see someone with a UK T shirt on, I say "Go Big Blue"! You'd be amazed how many people look at me like I'm from Mars, or like they have NO idea what I'm talking about.

(Maybe it's the antenna sticking out of my head I use to contact the mothership)

Certainly they know what you're talking about. Maybe they're anti-scoial. I've always found College to be one experience that most people love to talk about. Maybe they're just angry about their Basketball program? silly

I always talk to people in line around me. It used to drive King Charming stark raving mad. I guess it's one of those SC/NYC differences. See, I was brought up to speak to people and be polite. I guess in NYC that can get you mugged or something, huh? But after a while he noticed that I wasn't the only one doing this and he lightened up. He's still not much on talking to people in line but he doesn't fuss at me anymore.

What's really fun is when we used to be in line with our kids and would play the alphabet game. You know, one person gets letter A and must come up with something Disney related that starts with that letter (and someone's we'd narrow it just to names).... then the next person gets B and so forth. The people in line near us would invariably pick up on the game and be playing with us.

Of course, we don't do that anymore because the kids aren't with us anymore. Nowadays they're off doing their own thing. And lemme tell ya, this freedom is a game in and of itself. Ahhhhhhhhhh... ...... clapping clapping

Several comments on this one, HM:

1. Yes, it IS a north/south thing I think. One of the most unnerving things about moving from the north to the south was encountering people who were polite and seemingly interested in my well-being!

2. It's an interesting poll to see how many couples have one outgoing, gregarious person and one introvert. I've seen so many pairs with one person embarrasing the other because of their desire to meet everyone within a 20-mile radius!

3. Alphabet game is a great idea. Don't they have a book out now with "games to play while standing in line at Disney?"

4. Yay for you having alone time at Disney!

I think it would be really fun to have kids old enough to do their own thing. I guess that's always my idea of fun when it comes to family: A little time together, a little time apart.

I agree with MouseTraveler. It's a case by case thing. I love a fun chat with someone when I can tell they're in the mood. It is pretty easy to tell when someone just wants to be left alone, and I'm okay with that too.

Same for Buckeye fans.... I yelled out "O-H!" I don't know how many times and got nothing back... and they were dressed to the nines in the latest Buckeye gear.... grrrrrrr

HA! - We're guilty of that! I'll have my UGA hat on, and forget it's up there, and someone will say, "Go DAWGS!" and I'll be all like, "What?" laugh

True story - not at WDW, in Key West - we were at Sloppy Joe's, waiting in line to see Kenny Chesney. I had on my GA hat, and a woman yelled at me, "Hey, Georgia Girl, I'm buyin' you a drink!" After looking behind me to see who she was talking to, I realized she was talking to me. I smiled and politely declined. She said, "Okay, I think you're crazy as hell, but that's fine." biggrin Walkin' a little taller this year though - after a couple of not great seasons - SEC East Champs! Woot!

DH never stops talking, he can be best friends with anyone in under 3 minutes. It never ceases to amaze me, lol. So he's always chatting in line. I am more quiet and often like to be quiet, so I don't always chat, but it alot of fun when I do.

My husband doesn't like to chat but I do! A lot of times people will start talking to us or my son.
