Crowds at DisneyLand in early March?

Looking for real live feedback from anyone who's been to DisneyLand in early March. We're looking to go for about 5 days either the first or second week of March, 2013. But we want to try and avoid the height of the Spring Break crowds!

I've done a little searching on the boards and found a few trip reports - one from WyckedPhoenix from the late March, 2011 where she said the crowds were not as bad as she was expecting.

I've checked other sources as well, like Touring Plans, Allears and a few others, and it sounds like generally the crowds start to increase more towards mid-March through early April.

Anyone have any first-hand experience in early March? I'd appreciate any direct insight Smile

And while I'm asking - Paradise Pier or DisneyLand Hotel? I haven't convinced myself yet that we should splurge on the Grand Californian. But we might consider the concierge level at either of the other 2.

I would go the first week if possible.

I love the Disneyland Hotel. I've stayed there through more remodels than I can even count! You can't go wrong there. The Paradise Pier is cheaper for a reason. It was not built as a Disney hotel, so it's very regular. Disney bought it around the time they built California Adventure, maybe a little bit before.

The kids and I stayed one night in a suite in May and the latest remodel is stunning. I've also had DTD views that knocked my socks off. The room was sleek and classy, we technically had a parking lot view, however we had the best view of the fireworks I've ever had there, if you looked off to the right it was totally Disneyland View. The Grand Californian is magnificent, especially if you're a fan of arts & crafts mission style, but the Disneyland hotel has my heart. Plus, I could live on the green papaya slaw from Trader Sams. The addition of Trader Sams raised the bar on their casual food choices. Steakhouse 55 is also fantastic.

The area in the top right quad of the picture is the Disneyland Park, you can see the peak of the Matterhorn

Even when Disneyland is super crowded, you're not dealing with the same number of people as when Disney World is crowded. I've been in early March with no problems at all, and no matter what time of year you go you have to camp out a few hours early for Fantasmic! and World of Color. Get a dinner package for World of Color and consider doing the dessert box with reserved seating for Fantasmic! Just a heads up the Dessert Party (not really the same as a WDW dessert party, more like a picnic box with special seating) sells out pretty fast all year long. Even if you're not a fan of Fantasmic at DHS, you should see it at Disneyland, it was made to be shown on the river and you just can't beat that experience.

You'll discover that Jan-Feb-March are the rainy season. You may get lucky and not have any weather, but be prepared none the less. Temps should be in the 60s-70s, I usually wear jeans and a long sleeved tshirt with a sweater at night. You may see cast members in winter coats with hats and gloves. LOL!

Thanks so much for all the info, Kristen! And the pics. From what I was reading on ethe Disney site, the remodel of the hotel really was well done. So that's settled!

And we just decided on the first week of March.

Now I feel incredible behind on planning! I don't even have a spreadsheet started!!!! I guess we know what I will be doing over the long weekend. yay clapping yay

You are gonna have a blast. Its going to be nice to get a trip report from Disneyland. We hardly ever get one from there.

I have not personally stayed at any of the DL hotels yet. But my sister inlaw, her husband and 3 nephews have stayed at both DL Hotel and PP Hotel and she says she likes PP better.
I don't think you can go wrong with either. Enjoy your trip.

I went to DL the first week of March back in 2001... so its been a while... BUT we pretty much walked onto every ride. It was not crowded AT ALL... We were only there for 2 days (it was with my HS, we performed there...) but I remember the crowds being extremly light.

Jeff, do you share that as a template? Minus personal pics, of course? I'm SO bad at spreadsheets...mine are just black and white sad things. They work, but...*sigh*

If not, no worries! I can tell you've put a lot of work into that! Maybe I could bribe a student...
