DCL Navigators

Saw this on DISBoards this morning. These are the Navigators, which are the sheets handed out each day on DCL, with schedules, itineraries, etc.

These will give you a good idea of what kind of schedule to expect.

Thanks MT! Do they actually personalize those for YOU specifically based on your shore excursions?

I think they're generic, with all excursions listed. To be honest though, I didn't go back and look at them. Just relying on memory.

If they don't it would be a really great idea. Or let you personalize them online so you can remember stuff you specifically want to do, then have it waiting for you in your room.

They are generic, but that's a great idea cdub. You should email Disney with it. That would be really cool to have your excursion listed on the proper day. I imagine it would be logically difficult, though, to keep up with which Navigator goes to which room. If I were Disney I'd have to really think about the idea because it'd be so easy to mess up and bad customer service would be very, very detrimental to their reputation. But then again, they could offer it as a service wherein you would pick up your own Navigator at Guest Services and that would counter the potential nightmare of getting the right Navigator to the right room.

Yeah, you should definitely email them! I'd be willing to pop by GS the day before my excursion to get my own Navigator printed up.

I would think it more likely that you get a "video navigator" on your monitor in your cabin than a custom printed copy. That would be easy for DCL, and you'd just turn on your screen and it would show what events were purchased for each cabin for the time period designated.

THATS the suggestion you should make, because logistically there is no way in the proverbial .....ummm.... you know, that they're going to print different Navigators per cabin.

Kind of silly that they're not already doing that, eh? Think of the cost savings on paper and personnel if a computer could just update everything for everyone.

This reminds me of another question I have about cruises--what's the internet access like?

You will notice a marked difference in speed, as everything is done via satellite. It's also expensive. You can purchase a package in the internet cafes or you can buy wireless minutes for your own computer.

I know that on DCL, the 'hotspots' are limited on the ship.

See, that's what they've gotta fix...and soon. I know people like to "unplug" when they're on vacation, but I'm not sure I can live without the internet.

Is there something online that posts the costs per minute for personal wireless? (I wonder if those verizon cards work out there)

That's a really good point. I like to "not check in" on trips, but I like to have the option to if I need to. I almost can never get enough freedom from work that I wouldn't be necessary in an emergency.

Don't forget that in an emergency situation, you always have ship to shore phone. It's expensive, but you CAN be reached.

Is there anything like a ballpark standard on that rate?

Last time I checked it was seven bucks a minute for calling ship-to-shore. Not sure how it works in reverse.

Yikes! eek

Do your options change at all when you dock? I guess you could use a local cell when you get there? I'm having a hard time imagining being that disconnected.

It would probably depend upon where you are, who you have service with and your phone's capability. Some of the cruise lines are actually doing deals with cellular providers so that you can use your phone on their ships, but I'm pretty sure Disney hasn't done this yet.

My last phone upgrade (I use a Blackberry), I went ahead and got the little card you can insert that makes the phone available internationally. There wasn't a charge, and I'd SURE want to see what the logistics were (cost wise) if I ever got ready to use it.

The cell companies also offer the possibility of renting a phone for use when you are traveling outside the US.

I'm a novice at this stuff. Would the international card work when you're at sea or just when you're near a receptor tower?

It would only work when you're near a tower in a country where that provider has service. That probably isn't going to be at sea. The last time we cruised, I checked coverage. We lost it pretty soon once we left Canaveral.

Only thing that will work at sea is a satellite phone.
