Disney Marathons

I should start off by saying I am totally NOT a runner. The only time I run is if there is a REALLY good sale.

That being said..the idea of the marathons at Disney intrigue me! I wouldn't want to run in one but if I was a runner I think this would be a great excuse to combine Disney & running all in one. Has anyone here ever run in one of the Marathons?

I'm with you on running only for sales or maybe a fire. I will be in WDW for the 2011 marathon weekend. My friends are doing the Goofy's challenge and I will be the official photographer, cheerleader and trip planner. laugh

I've only done one 5K at Disney, but it was a blast. Would love to do another one, and maybe even a marathon someday!

I've just "returned" from my trip... I'll work on getting a quick trip report down some time soon... the main purpose of my trip was do try and run a half marathon... and I managed to complete it Smile

The run was a blast and was done in a way that only Disney could do... I think the best part was the run thru HS... The Osborne lights where on, and the streets where nearly empty!

I will do a half marathon at disney again...

That's really neat about the lights being on. I didn't even know they had them out this early.

I think I've heard someone, on those HGTV specials, they start putting the lights up in September. You can see they started on the Castle and what not.

I've never seen the lights in person before... and I must say it was very impressive. They also had a few (one or two) electrical floats on the course.

I really, really want to do the Princess 1/2 in Feb to celebrate the big 4-0. I'm working on training right now, but I've barely started and I'm off the pace. Still, I'm going to shoot for it. It looks AMAZING. What a great way to celebrate an achievement.

It's already 55% full. If I don't make it for the Princess, I'm pretty sure they'll do the Wine and Dine again, since it was such a huge success. Care to join me, Bella? mickey

I am not a runner but really thinking of training to do the Princess 1/2 Marathon for next year!

Lizzy, did you end up doing it?

I used to run, but never long distances. I want to try a 5K at Disney. I was intrigued by the info I was shown about the Everest challenge. It looks like it will be a lot of fun. I would like to try something like that first.

Catherine - I didn't make the Princess, but I'm signed up for the Wine & Dine in October, and I'm currently in training for it! I am SOO excited! Right now, I'm on Week 7 of Couch 2 5K, and I start the Jeff Galloway 1/2 training next month. I'm still not on pace, but everyone tells me to work on the distance and the pace will come, so that's what I'm doing. If I do well, I'll want to do the Princess 1/2 next February - maybe we can be running buddies!

Go for it! I am NO runner - but it's really an amazing - and gentle - process. I've stuck with only the running for the first 6 or 7 weeks - very few extra walks or bike rides so that I could protect my joints - but I've started some core strengthening (helps after the second baby to get back in shape anyway Smile ) and I start swimming this week.

Keep us posted! I'd love to hear about your progress! It's really exciting to do something you never thought you could do, and to do something that requires so much preparation and training. I know I'll be a better person for the process!

I did the Princess 1/2 this year and loved it! I have never been a runner but I ended up loving (almost) every minute of the race. Disney keeps you entertained before and during the race with characters, fireworks, and music. And running through Magic Kingdom and Epcot was an amazing experience. I saw a lot of people who walked the entire race so don't think you have to be a distance runner to take part in the race. My next goal is the Disney Marathon in January! mickey

Are you working up your distance right now? Or have you not started training yet?

Well I took about a month off after the Princess because my legs needed a break, so I've been just now getting back into a normal running routine. Currently I'm running 3 miles a few times a week and will hopefully be adding some longer distances in May mickey

Did you run the whole half marathon? Most people stop and walk some, right? (I'm just wondering HOW out of shape I really am. I can't imagine running that far)

No I didn't run the whole thing and there were a lot of people who walked. I was running with a friend and met some people at the start I paced with for the first half of the race so we would run about 1/2 a mile and walk a 1/4 and then run again. About half way through the race my friend's knee really hurt so we slowed it down for the last half. What I realized during the last 2 miles of the race was that if I stopped running my legs hurt even more so I just tried to power through the last few miles. It was a great accomplishment and the whole experience turned me into a runner. I say go for it...barring some major injury or issue you will be fine Smile
