Disney Vacation Club’s Point Pool Problem

This is a great article discussing the problem being created within DVC by the resorts being closed. It also offers some solutions that Disney could take to alleviate the problem.

If I end up with "extra" points that need to be used I will likely do so by adding a day or upgrading from a studio to a one bedroom for my trips.

Have a read here.

This could be a big problem for us. With our April trip being canceled we now have 247 points returned. If July gets canceled and I am pretty sure it will, we will have another 300+ returned to our account. We are already booked for September. Even if we could come up with time off to use them, availability of rooms may be very limited.

I want to say that the good news is that it's always easier to get the larger rooms than the smaller ones. However, this is one of those times when all bets are off and no one really knows what to expect moving forward. I really do hope that DVC figures out a way to make this fair for everyone and people don't end up with wasted points by the droves. Sometimes I feel like members get the short stick merely because they already have our money. This is a good time to prove that we are valued.

Obviously the rest of this year, depending on when everything reopens and probably most of next year, the DVC properties will be filled. Would it be better for DVC to give those members who lost points because of what's this year, their points back in a future year like 2022 and beyond? Or maybe let members pick which year that they would want their returned points in?

I would like to see the points either put into a special account that can be used whenever or be able to use the points to stay in non DVC rooms at DVC rates. I do however understand that depending on how long this lasts that may not be possible. Our biggest problem with our July trip is that is with our kids and grandkids. Both our Son and Granddaughter are insulin dependent diabetics. I am not to concerned for us but I am for them.

Honestly, I'd be just as happy if they offered us free dining on our reservations. laugh

I know, that doesn't alleviate the problem of potentially not being able to get a reservation. Tom Bricker had a decent idea of opening up non-DVC resort room inventory to be used. They all already have point costs assigned to the rooms, DVC would merely need to say that we didn't have to pay the $95 conversion fee it usually costs to book in those rooms instead of a villa.

We may lose our points from our cancelled May trip. They were banked from 2019 so they expire end of January. We are already booked for next January. I'm going to try adding a second week to that trip but if we end up having to cancel, they'll be gone. I'd take a free dining plan on my next trip though. Or a discount on my annual dues.

Can you use them for the ABD trip you were thinking about booking? That's what I was thinking if we can't go next year either.

Yes, very interested to see if they do anything with the dues.

We wouldn't be able to because they expire January 31 2021. Also, we bought resale so we can't use them for anything other than DVC resorts.

Bummer on both counts. Fingers crossed that we can start traveling again in the fall and you can take a 2-week vacation in January 2021. crossfingers

I'm concerned because we have a June 6th trip currently booked and our banking deadline is May 31st. Hopefully we'll have enough information by that time to make a final decision because I will be bummed if our entire first year of points is lost because we didn't bank in time. I completely understand the struggle that Disney is facing (and I'm sure there are a lot of legal aspects I don't understand) but I really hope that Disney finds a way to make it right for those losing out on points during this time.
