I took my boyfriend there for the first time last summer, and he agreed. He felt it took away from the experience instead of adding to it. I would love to see it relocated.

did he like the other park monuments? i think the other three are top notch.

Yes he liked the other three very much, especially SE

personally I feel that TGMR should be the "icon" . . in a way it was back in the day. It made me feel like I was in hollywood. The hat takes that away because I can't see the chinese theater.

Don't get me wrong, the hat is ok . . I just think it could be placed somewhere not in front of tgmr

I feel like maybe TGMR is big enough? The rest of the icons are pretty visible from the entrance and stand out. Even the hat doesn't dominate your view like SE. Maybe they could make some additions to TGRM as part of an improvement project?

PS I wonder how you would go about moving the hat?

I'm not 30 yet and am not familiar with some of the classic movie references, I do feel it's pretty hokey, I do think it could use a 'refresh'...but I LOVE TGMR! I go on it every trip and sometimes more than once. I just think it's fun...that sometimes intangible, almost inexplicable fun.

That sounds like the right attitude! It can be hokey and fun at the same time!

I concur. Look at Pirates! That's 30+ year-old technology and it's largely unchanged from the first time I went on in the early eighties. Still one of my favorite rides all time, including world-class thrill rides (which I also enjoy).

Disney does a great job of fusing old style with new. I can't get enough of Haunted Mansion, Splash Mountain etc, where the old characters and artwork is all around me.

Yep, two more of my favorites. Splash Mountain isn't remotely scary for me any more, but I still get those butterflies every time.

Disney's definitely got the opportunity to capitalize on those of us who went as kids and are nostaligic for the "old days." I thinkwe have a post about that somewhere around here. The "new generation" of Disney nostalgia...

one day kids will be nostalgic about "up" and "the incredibles" i'm betting. unless disney starts making some quality films again themselves.

For me Disney nostalgia (as for as television/movies) is epitomised by the afterschool classics like Darby O'Gill and the Little People.

There's also a Darby O'Gill reference in the Obscure Disney Quotes thread.

Fantastic! This group just keeps getting cooler. I guess I knew there were such people out there somewhere, but I've not met anyone that shared the same fondness for these movies.

Will read the other thread to.

p.s. I just went and bought it on Amazon; haven't seen it in years.

I have a particular fondness for Darby O'Gill. I love the way they did the photography in that movie. Plus it's just a fun story.

Sometimes I do go to the Great Movie Ride, sometimes I skip it.

The last time I rode it was at the day Muetti and I purchased our Seasonal Passes, last Christmas.
