DVC as a financial decision

I know many of us have DVC memberships so I was curious. Did most of you buy it because it was a way to make your vacation cheaper, or was something else driving the decision? Most of the people I talk to don't necessarily see it as a way to save money as much as ... something else indescribable. Am I way off base here?

Well I can only speak for myself, but after doing the math I could stay for cheaper in a value resort like POP but when staying in a place like AKL for 2 weeks in a studio for the wife and I , we will be saving money and the facilities such as kitchen or laundry help and give us a "homier" feel. I personally love my DVC membership and the perks that go with it. BUT the perks are trimming down a little.

Like the valet parking? Still, that discount on the annual pass is fantastic!

For us , we looked at it a few different ways. For us, at the end of paying it off in ten years, we will definitely have safe a substantial amout of money. The perks were an insentive to a point, but we knew they could change at times. We really wish we would have gotten in when they first offered the DVC. We just did it because, its the only place we go! We love WDW. We're planning our next vacation the day we leave on the ride home. We will also have something that we really really love, to leave to our kids, at least for a little while, maybe, after we are gone! Althought if I'm 96 years old, in a wheel chair, and on oxygen the last year of my time share, you bet your buttons somebody is taking this old man to WDW!

It was a no brainer for us. We are a family of 5 and so far, the last 2 trips we've taken CJ's mom so that makes 6 - you can't get 6 in a room anywhere without spending $$$$ or you need 2 rooms somewhere. This year is the year it really matters - before it wasn't to big of an issue because our youngest was under 3 but this year he's 3 and now he 'counts' for room occupancy.

We've been spoiled with the Polynesian and I just can't see us wanting to stay in a moderate or value resort area - call me a snob but when I go on vacation I want to be spoiled laugh

We financed 320 points for 10 years knowing we'll pay it off in less than 3 - and then I will be adding another 160 points - paying cash. Having 480 points is perfect for our big trip every year.

We also like the facts that you can use points for places besides Disney! That is a huge plus!

I definitely think the more people you have going the more compelling the math becomes. Also, the kitchen can be handy with large groups that are hard to get coordinated.
