DVC Prices on the Rise Again

The Disney Vacation Club has announced yet another price increase for two properties currently in its inventory, because even if you go DVC the initial purchase price never goes down. I bought into DVC for the first time in 2008 at AKL for $112 a point.

According to DVC News "On July 15, 2012 prices for ownership at the Bay Lake Tower at Disney's Contemporary Resort will rise from $160 per point to $165. The cost per point at Disney's Animal Kingdom Villas will increase from $130 to $135. This latest increase is the third price increase for each property in six months' time, increasing the cost by $15 per point at both resorts."

In addition to the price increases, points needed per night to stay at the newer resorts are also on the rise. Bay Lake Tower is currently the most expensive DVC Resort on Property, and I'm sure that the Grand Floridian will be even greater. Details slowly continue to trickle out about what new resort amenities are planned for the DVC expansion, but I personally have my doubts if what's planned for Grand Floridian will have the value that it will cost per point both to purchase or to stay.

What do you think about it?

It is hard to guess how quickly they will sell. I do think that those who love the resort will probably pay the points to stay there though. I am sure when DVC finally comes to the Poly we will be staying there. I will admit we are debating on whether or not we want to buy into the Poly or just add on points at our much much lower priced Saratoga Springs. The only downside to just adding on will be our booking window.

Right, that booking window. When I first heard that they would be building at GF I told my husband that I HAD to own there. It's truly one of my favorite resorts. But the more that I think about it, the more I think that I would rather add more on to my AKL points. One of the things that annoys me about having small point add ons is that I end up with different booking dates and use years. I think if we add on again we'll probably do more AKL points with a December use year and cross our fingers for 7 month availability.

Yeah... I saw that to. I never knew how much we bought into, but I found out about a month ago when they announced the price increase and was trying one last time for us to buy at the older price. My Dad was like... oh no... that is still WAY higher than what we payed. So I asked, and we got 210 points for $88, and there are like 3 contracts because they let him split them up. I think its 100/60/50?

AKL from Disney = $135/pt, resale average is $70/pt
BLT from Disney = $165/pt, resale average is $95/pt

I would be hard pressed to pay that price to Disney, when resale is $65 to $70/pt lower.

Yeah but you also have to look at what your getting for that. Most of those selling at that price have used all the points for the next few years so you can't even use them right away!

And many of them have some serious years off of the contract as well, plus you can't use resale points to book a cruise!

One certainly needs to be aware if a resale contract is stripped(current and next year points already used). Stripped and high point contracts are cheaper. 50-100 point contracts are higher. At the same time, there are some fully loaded resale contracts available. Example of a current AKL resale contract:

227 points coming on 9/1/12 (175 + 52 banked points from 2011, banked points need to be used by 9/1/13) and 175 points coming on 9/1/13. Priced at $70 per point.

Yes, the older DVC resort contracts expire in 2042, SSR in 2047, AKL in 2054, BLT in 2060. Resale contracts have the same expiration date as contracts purchased direct from Disney. Depends on the resort.

I myself would never use my points for a cruise, so not an issue for me, but the savings from buying AKL or BLT resale would go a long way towards paying for a cruise OOP.

Nice to have some cheaper options available to enjoy our favorite place on a regular basis. Wish I could afford to buy add on at BWV, but we just paid for a wedding, so that's not gonna happen for a while now. laugh

I like how resale value now is getting close to what we payed. Makes me feel better in our investment.
