Eating outside of Disney?

Although we have lots of food planned at Disney, we have a few days where we will be out and about in Orlando and would like to try dinners 'off-site'! I hear the food can be better value than in the parks, but we don't want to fall into a terrible tourist trap!

So far we've be recommended:
Lighthouse Lobster Feast
Tony Romas
and
Charley's Steak House

Are there others that are worth a peek? Is there a dining experience we can't miss (I remember having a competition with my younger siblings at an 'All you can eat' breakfast buffet in Orlando when I was 11, but funnily enough I'm not sure I want to do that again!!!)? ((I lost. My brother ate 23 sausages)) awesome

Another great and classy rest. that I muchlove is Texas De Brazil which is situated on International Dr. at the upper end across the road from what I beleive is the Millenium Mall, a really large mostly empty Mall. Texas De Brazil is a really good high end Brazillian Steakhouse all that you care to eat , where they carve the large skewers of different meats right at your table.I beleive it is called a Churriscaria. (??? on the spelling ) Expensive but well worth it in my opinion.

Oh that sounds like a brilliant idea - we haven't any plans to try any Mexican food so far so it'd be a nice change Laughing out loud Thank you! muchlove

If you go up and down I-Drive you can find many yummy eats that Orlando residents frequent.

We've always found Souplantation great value for money. I think the nearest one to WDW is http://www.souplantation.com/locations/restaurant.aspx?store_id=116&store_name=Lake_Buena_Vista

Ocarina before you think about cabs, make a few enquiries as its not as cheap as you think. I have been quoted $110 for a return trip from Kidani to Florida Mall. If you can do Lynx and Trolley without too much trial go for it. Can recommend red lobster and Tony Romas (if you go to Tony's ask if Amber is working we had her as a waitress last year and she was fab, she is also an ex Disney CM) I ate at Charleys a long long time ago and it was good but very expensive.

Texas De Brazil is awesome, but it is absolutely NOT Mexican food. It is as Vettelover said, is a high end steakhouse in the Churriscaria style. There is a buffet of assorted salads, cheeses and antipastas, then they carve the large skewers of different meats (steak, turkey, chicken, pork, shrimp) right at your table.

We always stop by outback for a great meal Smile I would also caution the use of cabs as they can be pretty pricey, could you hire a car for the day?

Are you looking for dining experiences or just decent places to fill your belly?? Tony Roma's is pretty good, but very similar to Outback. PLEASE skip Red Lobster. lol. I would be so embarrassed for you to think that's how American's eat seafood (it's not BAD, it's just not a great seafood place). There is a decent, but pricey seafood place called Fishbones not too far from Universal Studios. Also, if you are looking for themed places, Universal Studios City Walk has a number. I personally like Margaritaville (I admit, I'm a HUGE Parrot Head), but there is a lot going on (massive theming) and everyone agreed when we were there in March that it was the best burger we'd had in a while (of course, we were STARVING, so maybe that was it). Texas de Brazil is really good, kind of pricey, but if you like meat, it's the place to go (if you think you want to go there, try signing up for their fan club/email group - my sister constantly gets coupons for the one up by us). If you don't like meat or don't think you want to eat your weight in meat, pass on it. Bahama Breeze and Kobe are two other chains. We didn't eat at them, but people in my party had in the past and gave them two thumbs up.

I've never eaten at the Texas de Brazil, now I have to, thanks. But anyways and back to your question, what do you fancy? Recommend you calculate the taxi ride (ask front desk for average cost of taxis to ???) into your dinner budget, could be as much as $10 - $20 each way.

I read on this forum of a restaurant called "The Ravenous Pig" http://www.theravenouspig.com/ It was highly recommended then, I am sure the chef is still doing his magic crossfingers !

Enjoy.
