First visit to WDW since childhood

Already breaking the rules, maybe. I'm bringing the kids, but I have found the tips and other advice very useful so far. We're arriving at our WDW resort early Dec. 31, 2011 and plan to enjoy the crowd at MK then spend the rest of the week seeking out all the attractions.

Hello and welcome!! Really, noone minds kids - we will not hold that against you! And your kids are probably more mature than I am laugh

I think it would be awesome to spend New Years at WDW, as a kid or an adult! Tell us more so we can live through you!

If you have any questions or need any suggestions, ask away. We love to talk Disney and share.

@ Joann C
We're driving into Ocala from Alabama and staying over night there to save a few bucks then getting over to the All-star Movies resort from Dec 31 to Jan 5 (5 nights, 6 days). We haven't made any ADR's yet, but I'm trying to gather info now on what days we'll be where, so we can make our ADR's.
Thanks everyone for the comments. The first order of business is to learn all of the acronyms used in the forums.

So excited for you! You won't believe how much it has changed since you were a kid. It truly is "The Most Magical Place On Earth"!!! What Disney resort are you staying at?

Hi Square Ace and welcome! We're glad you're here, and we're so excited to help you plan in any way we can, and to hear about your trip and experience. We are really bad about throwing around abbreviations, so please, call us on it if anything is confusing. When you went as a kid, did you stay on property? What's your favorite park?

And re: kiddoes...several of us have small children, and some have grown children. We don't mind kids at all...we just like for people to understand that Disney is fun for kids of all ages mickey

Hi, welcome! No worries about the kids. Travel with mine sometime, and without others, it all depends on the trip!

Sounds like you're going to have a great holiday!

Welcome! Can't help with kiddie questions as DH and I don't have any, but can help otherwise.

You are brave to make your first trip NYE.

I know. I'm sure it will be crazy that day, but I'm hoping the next 5 days will be a great time to see some of the attractions.
We know we're in for very crowded day on NYE, but we expect it to be an experience that our kids and ourselves will remember for a lifetime.

Katrina1122. I'm guessing DH doesn't stand for dead husband since DH seems to accompany you on your trips.
What is DH?

DH is "Dear Husband" DW "Dear Wife" DS "Dear Son" etc. So you were close!

In all my times in WDW I've never seen the NYE fireworks, so I'm kind of jealous! You'll have to let us know how they are. I'd also be interested to see how quickly the crowds clear out after New Years. Let us know how we can help. We particularly love helping with ADRs! Smile

On the WDW website it shows the MK being open only til 12:00, but I remember seeing it somewhere that the hours will likely be extended.

I'll be posting some questions in the dining section about ADR advice next week.
It takes me all day to get ready for Alabama to play football, then the rest of the weekend to wind back down, LOL.

Welome and might I say how brave you are to attempt nye at Disney! We're local (kinda - Tampa) and have done nye several times. My dh loves it, not so much for me. Just be prepared for the crowds of a lifetime, like nothing I have ever seen, even at wdw.
We had 5 of us together and it was extremely difficult to get anywhere together through the crowds. We had to form a chain and work our way through the crowds and it took a long time. We have always gone to EPCOT, but don't know why. The fireworks are incredible. Our best family memory is: as we were passing a particular corner in EPCOT, my ds who was about 12 at the time, announced "what's that funny smell" as we rounded the corner, we were all hit by the very strong smell of pot! Of course my kids had no idea and my dh and I just smirked to each other. Later, when we regrouped at Boardwalk (which I recommend to spend some time, a little less crowded) , we told them what it was that they smelled and my son was absolutely appalled. We were shocked at his reaction, but growing up w Disney as his playground, he was so mad that someone would have the nerve to smoke pot at Disney! Years later whenever we pass that corner, someone will make a comment and get him started all over again! Disney is revered in our family and my kids have grown up there, so to think anyone would smoke pot there is just offensive!
Lots of excessive drinking (and smoking) at EPCOT which we weren't crazy about with younger kiddos. Something about drunk people in a crowd, might as well be in times square, except the fireworks are better at Disney! We are not prudes and I get a beer or margarita at EPCOT now and then, but it was out of hand. If we try again, maybe we'll try mk where they don't sell alcohol.
You'll have fun, if nothing else it's an experience. Watch what parks you're in and when. We go up later in the afternoon and a lot of times on holidays MK is closed because it's at capacity. Might want to pick a park and stay there. AK has been closed due to capacity also. I'm not sure how that works, 5 people leave, they let 5 in? We just stay away if it's that packed!

@ Bella
DS = 5yr, DD = 8yr.

@ Julie
That's a crazy NYE story. We'll be at MK, so we won't have to worry about drunks, or being one ourselves, LOL. We will have to worry about the crowds and keeping up with DS and DD. We have already considered the park closing for capacity. We booked a room in Ocala on the night before, so we can get to the park early, then stay til after all the fun is over. We'll get to re-visit MK later in the week when it is hopefully a lot less crowded.

That's terrific! That week or two just after New Year's is usually quieter.
