Fish Extender Fun

I signed up through a Facebook Group for my Disney Cruise to be part of a Fish Extender Gift Exchange. I'm pretty dern excited about it, but at the same time really nervous. We have 21 rooms in our group, so we made gift bags for 20 that we will deliver to the other rooms in our group while onboard.

I finished my gifts last night!! We decided to just go for a single cabin gift, and we had to change what we were doing along the way because one of my crafts just did not work out. Our final theme is sort of a home town gift. It wasn't super expensive, and it's not extravagant, but I hope that people can tell I put some thought and heart into the thing. Here's what we ended up with!

What's inside the bags ?

  • Pocket Sock Monkey
  • Mini Sewing Kit decorated with Mickey
  • A Bag of My Favorite Tea
  • A Pack of Trident
  • A Pressed Penny from Rockford
  • The glittery bags are "pirate treasure" to hand out as pixie dust on pirate night.

I also wrote a cute poem to slip into the bags so that I could explain what the gifts were, here that is.

Hello new friends out while we roam, From Illinois, our prairie home As we sail the ocean blue, We'd love to share some gifts with you.

While away from home, things are missed,
Where we're from, here's the gist:
We start off with a mending kit,
To keep your clothes neat and fit.

Gum is hard to find at sea,
But down our road? A Trident fact'ry.
A cup of comfort " Kristen's favorite tea;
From Tori's museum, a pressed penny.

Sock Monkeys started in our town,
And this little guy wants to hang around
With you, our friends on the Disney Cruise,
With all the fun and Caribbean views.

Have you done and FE exchange?

If you have a Disney Cruise coming up and want to join a Fish Extender Gift Exchange:

  • For general information about Fish Extender Exchanges check out the article in Family Travel Magazine.
  • There's also a great group on Facebook called FISH EXTENDER DISNEY CRUISE LINE about everything Fish Extender. You can also search Facebook for a group for your specific cruise by using a search similar to this "Disney Dream February 23, 2015"
  • The third option is to go to that "other" forum where Fish Extender Exchanges started. However they have levied some fairly strict rules about what you can and can't post on their boards and get cranky if you decided you want to organize or talk to people about it anywhere else. I highly suggest using facebook over them, so much so I'm not even going to name them. I'll be honest, I found my Facebook group through that "other" message board and haven't really been back because I don't enjoy the environment there.

Aww thank you! I've always found sock monkey's a little creepy, but they were "born" where we live so I thought it was a good representation of my home. I've been toying with the idea of using one of my extras for a "sock monkey's vacation photo tour" type of thing.

I always learn so much from you guys. I've never heard of Fish Extenders and it sounds so fun!! I have yet to take a Disney cruise, but I will keep this in mind for when I do. I think your gifts are adorable Kristen and would be thrilled to get that!

Great gift. Some of my favorites were the gifts from "home" for each person giving them.

I really did enjoy it on our cruise but it is a lot of work and a lot to carry around. A full suitcase going with what we were giving and an even fuller one coming home with everything we got. There was only 12 cabins in our group. Mom took care of the kids and I did the adult gifts. Didn't even think to take pics of what we gave.

Honestly once was enough for me. I may do it on one later down the road, just not the next one for sure.

I had never heard the term Fish Extender until you mentioned it a few months ago. What a great way to have fun DIY/craft time and meet new friends at the same time. Yours are really cute!

It was a lot of work, even just doing a single cabin gift vs. one for adults and one for kids. I don't know how the folks who make super personalized gifts, or a gift for each day, do it. I was very happy that my group allowed us the freedom to decided how we wanted to do the gifts. I had a total meltdown the night I discovered my original idea was not working.

I looked at it a bit like putting together a little party favors. Every room would get the same gift no matter what the age, and I was only giving out one. I also don't want to spend too much time delivering, so doing it this way all I need is a list of cabin numbers and I can drop it in the FE and keep moving.

How I'm packing everything has been another challenge for sure, especially when I misread the scale yesterday and thought it all weighed 40 pounds. laugh Luckily my son was able to teach me how to properly use out luggage scale and it weighs 8 pounds. I'm starting to be at the age where my kids have to explain how the new-fangled technologies work and it's crazy embarrassing. wheelchair

We gave the adults bottles of rum with drink recipes tied to them. The labels had Jack Sparrow pictured or Alice in a bottle that said drink me. We give various gifts to the kids, the teens always get drawstring backpacks filled with candy, pencils, etc. Tweens get candy and rainbow loom keychains or bracelets, littles get lanyards, candy, coloring pages, crayons, puzzles or pirate stuff, and toddlers and infants usually get a stuffed animal.

so when you do the FE, does every family supply their ages, then its up to you to decide if you are doing individual gifts vs. family gifts?

Our group list was names, ages, state they are from and favorite characters. If they had 1 or 2 cabins and if they were celebrating anything was on there too.

Every FE Group is organized by a different person, so they are all run just a little differently depending on your group. Our Sailing had 5 different FE groups of 21 rooms each and we could sign up to be in as many of the groups as we wanted to. We were in Group 3 so we had 20 rooms to give gifts to. We were all given a spreadsheet with the cabin number/s, first names, gender, adult or child's age, and a note if they were celebrating something special or if they had dietary restrictions (for instance a peanut allergy). Our group minimum was to deliver one gift to each cabin during the cruise. Some people did individual gifts, some gave adult or child gifts, some just did one cabin gift. We got a few really great things, and a lot of "stuff," but we could tell that everyone in our group had put a lot of time and effort into creating their gifts.

We had fun checking to see what was left for us, and we really enjoyed walking around and delivering, we got to see how creative everyone was with their doors and FE pockets. It was a LOT of work and we came home with an extra suitcase filled with stuff from the group. I would absolutely do it again though.

I love this idea and I thought the gifts you gave out were so lovely. Recipients would be able to tell that a lot of care and thoughtfulness went into them.

I am intrigued to know what your favourite gift was that you received? Any pics?

My favorite gift was another home town gift. There was a girl in our group that was from Ireland, and she put together a lovely little photo album and information about her life and her home town. In the back of the book she left an Ireland pin and a green Mickey Mouse bottle opener. I thought it was wonderful because the book was so personal and she obviously put a lot of care into it.

We also received a Mickey Icon necklace that I think I will probably wear a lot in the future. I'll take some pictures in a little bit and post them.

I'm glad to hear that you had a lot of fun and would do it again. This post was the first time I've ever heard about the FE. We have a cruise coming up in November now, my husband, my mom, sister and me. And we are all excited to get ideas together.

I know I haven't posted pictures of this yet - I am so sorry!
Sometimes recovering from vacation takes awhile for me. I promise it's on my to do list!
