Fort Wilderness

So has anyone ever rented an RV and stayed FW? Or how about one of the cabins?

I'm feeling kinda "campy" right now and am wondering how FW is. Can you do a DP if you are in an RV? I'd still not want to cook much, have to get my Boma on!

No one has stayed at FW?

The only stay I had at Ft. Wilderness was at least 20 or 25 YRS. ago so I don't think it would be relevant today, We stayed in the cabins and we loved the quiet and privacy and it was more accomodating for the kids (3) and the full cooking capabilities of the kitchen. Of course getting to and from the parks was a little hassle. I'm sure it has vastly improved in 20 yrs. Sorry I could not be more help.

Haven't stayed there, but my only problem with the resort is how difficult it is to get anywhere. You seem to have to take an internal bus even to get to the boats/buses to parks! I definitely don't want to "commute" to the parks. Sad

Yeah, I've read about that, but I've also read that it really isn't all that bad. Plus, once you get to the boat to MK, you can hop on the monorail to epcot or use TTC to others if the inner resort busses are slow, so that doesn't concern me too much. At least I don't think it does, I just don't know enough about it.

We dont own an RV. If we did... we would probably do it. Now if it was camping in tents. Id be all over it... but I think it would be kinda fun to go to Disney in an RV to be honest.

Joe is an expert on this. My biggest reservation about FW in an RV is how close they park them to each other.

I think it sounds cool but I don't know if it's something that I would want to do. When I go on vacation to Disney that's like luxury...I don't want to be ruffing it...LOL

Is an RV really roughing it though? biggrin

I wouldn't want to do a tent in Disney either, my body hurts enough after a long day, I don't need to add sleeping on the ground to it. But the rv's you can't rent are pretty nice, so I don't really see that as roughing it.

Closeness of the rv's could be a problem though. Are you right on top of each other?

Yeah... but you also know. When we camp with a tent... its still not roughing it... lol

Nice queen sized air mattresses... power... fans...

It's pretty similar to other RV parks and some of the lots are quite close together. That said, I always think it seems fun to get to know your neighbors in situations like that. Each "block" of lots becomes a little neighborhood.

Where can you rent RVs? Does Disney rent them? I think it would be great fun to stay there for a while, though I would probably get annoyed with the internal bus system. I'd have to ask for a space right over by Hoop Dee Doo and the boat launch so that getting around would be very easy!

How likely are you guys to try this out, Katrina?

I'm much more up on the idea than DH is at this point. Plus we are hoping to go in 2012 with 2 other couples (hey Caitie and Jason) for our 10th anniversary. If we did that, the likely hood everyone would feel campy is greatly reduced so I'd have to work on it for another time, but I think it's definetley in my future, or at least I hope so. The more reasearch I have in my back pocket, the easier a sell it would be. I'd like to go in 2011, but it is looking less and less likely as the year goes on.

I worked at a residential summer camp for 3 summers, so an RV would be luxury to me after living at a Girl Scount Camp, lol. I miss the camping though, haven't done it in years and with fibromyalgia an air mattress/cot in a tent isn't going to cut it, so I figure FW is a great place to camp in style. And from what I can tell renting an RV would be nicer than a cabin since it's only a full size bed.

I've never camped in a rv park other than tent camping near RV's in a state park. Those lots were very far apart so you rarely heard your neighbors. Our favorite spot had so many trees you couldn't even see the next site. With that said, every night there was a huge campfire at someone's site, or a night hike or something. I loved the neighborly feeling you got there.

So SpaceAce, to answer your question "How likely are you guys to try this out, Katrina?" It's up in the air, but as far as I'm concerned it's likely at some point.

I stayed in a cabin at FW in '08 and I absolutely LOVED it.
they are awesome... very quiet and really homey feeling. if your home is a cabin that is.
true the internal bus system kinda stunk but the way around that is to ensure that you
get one of the rental golf carts for the length of your stay. I wont stay there again without it!
but the fort wilderness area is beautiful!

I don't know if it's something we'll ever do, but I think Fort Wilderness is way cool. Love to visit it. I think if we did it we'd probably do the cabin.

I am actually pretty sure you can tent it up at Fort Wilderness...so there you go Jess sounds like a dream vaycay!!!

I have never stayed at FW but maybe if you are interested the cabins have always looked really intriguing to me. I am sure it is less expensive then renting an RV..and you don't have to dispose of your own waste. sarcastic

Now I could be completely WRONG and maybe someone can set me straight, I could have sworn that I read somewhere that you can actually rent tents and camping equipment from Disney to use at Fort Wilderness. In fact the article said that Disney personel could even set up the rental tents for you (for a fee of course) if you were so inclined. Or was I having a senior moment??? This was a while ago that I read this.

LOL....well if all I had to do was sleep in the tent it might not be that bad...if they set everything up and we could eat at the park it would be doeable

Taken from an unknown website and I do not know how old the post is. So don't get too excited.

Can you rent camping gear at FW?
Yes. However, the official policy for Fort Wilderness is that rental tents and cots are only available to groups of 20 or more using Creekside Meadow, the primitive camping area. However, official policy and practice seem to differ. Individuals have rented equipment before and I've called FW myself and been told they do rent equipment to individuals if they have it available and a group hasn't already made arrangements to rent it. Tents are $30 per night, cots are $3 per night, so it's not cheap. Also, if you do stay in Creekside Meadow, the cost is $10 per person (20 person minimum). For group reservations, call (407) 939-7807 Monday through Friday between 9 am and 4 pm.

That's always been the downside to FW imo, for me anyway. DH's parents have an RV, but there is no way that they'd pay what it costs to park it at FW. I suppose it's cheaper than a room, but when you consider that you're bringing your room with you, you'd still like to save some $$$ Smile

That's what I would think too..especially if you own the RV. I like the maids coming to make my bed and the waiters taking my plates away. Cleaning on vacation..no bueno!

I found a few rv rental companies that deliver the rv to your site at FW, set it up, stock it (no food), pick it up and clean it for you. That might not be a bad way of doing it.

Oh this is so interesting.

I always found a few pics of tent camping, with one person renting cots from FW. They had 2 in their tent, a fan, plastic dressers and a carpet inside! It was quite the set up. I love camping, but still wouldn't 'tent it up' at disney. (Sorry Jess, lol)
